Fit and fat are probably not two words that you would usually put together. Thin but out of shape are also not likely to be words you would string together. Yet it is true that you are not necessarily in poor shape if you are overweight or in great shape if you are thin. Generally speaking, being overweight does put you at a greater risk for many health conditions including diabetes, heart disease and even strokes. On the other hand, being thin does not necessarily make you immune to those health risks.
Unfortunately, there will always be some people who see someone that is overweight and assume that they eat too much and are not physically active. This is often not the case at all. You might be overweight even if you do not overeat. The problem might be more a matter of what you eat. Eating the wrong combinations of foods can lead to excess pounds.
You might exercise regular or be physically active and still consider yourself fat. If you are someone who eats too much throughout the day, exercise alone will not keep the extra pounds away. You might be very active and physically fit while still carrying around extra pounds as a result of your eating habits.
You might be overweight as a result of health conditions. For example, if you suffer from hypothyroidism, your body might have difficulty burning off calories efficiently. It is possible that you eat well-balanced meals that are low in fat and abundant in all the healthiest nutrients even though you are a few pounds overweight. You might be very active and exercise regularly. If you are overweight as a result of a health condition, you might be in excellent health and great shape even if the pounds on the scale are not ideal.
Did you know that just as it is possible to be fit and fat, it is also possible to be thin but out of shape? A small number on the scales or a tiny dress size, does not necessarily mean you are in good shape. You can be well within the normal range of weight for your age and height while still being in poor physical shape and health.
It is possible for you to appear thin while still having a body structure with too much fat. You can wear a small size and weight less than your friends while actually being fatter. You might actually have a larger percentage of body fat than some of your friends who weigh more than you. If you eat the wrong foods and are a coach potato, your potential of being thin with too many pounds of fat and to few pounds of muscle increases.
Your arteries could be clogged and your heart could be overworked even if you are considered to be skinny. Just because you can eat whatever you want without gaining weight does not mean you should. If you overeat or eat too many foods high in fats and sugars, your body can suffer even if you remain thin.
The image you see when you look in the mirror in terms of your weight does not necessary tell the full story. You can appear to be a little chubby and still be in good physical shape and health. You can look thin and trim and actually be unhealthy and in poor shape.
