In every conference in college football there are players that are going to be heavily depended on for certain teams to succeed. These players could be the difference between a team being a bottom dweller and a good team. Some of them could even be the difference between being a good team and a great team. Here are five of the most important players in the ACC.
Brandon Ore, Virginia Tech
Virginia Tech’s running back was named to the preseason All-ACC team and was second behind only Matt Ryan in votes. But once you look at Brandon Ore’s production this year it is easy to see why Virginia Tech has not looked very good so far. In two games Brandon Ore has only rushed for 98 yards, 49 yards per game, and only 2.6 yards per rush. Ore isn’t even one of the top ten rushers in the ACC so far this year. If Brandon Ore continues to play this way it could be more trouble for Virginia Tech but if he can turn it around the Virginia Tech could still win the ACC.
Drew Weatherford, Florida State
It doesn’t take a genius to see that Florida State’s success relies greatly on how well the quarterback plays. Just look at Drew Weatherford’s first two games. In the first game Drew Weatherford’s completion percentage was just fifty percent, he threw for 142 yards and got sacked five times. In the second game of the season Drew Weatherford threw 21 for 33 with 314 yards and didn’t get sacked at all. Florida State won that game. If Drew Weatherford can play well then Florida State can win the ACC but if Drew Weatherford’s game is suspect like it has been in the past then it will be another disappointing year in Tallahassee.
Matt Ryan, Boston College
Brandon Ore finished second in preseason All-Conference voting and is not playing well but the leading voter is not disappointing. Matt Ryan was named the preseason pick for Player of the Year. So far Matt Ryan has thrown for 550 yards and 6 touchdowns in two games. Ryan is second in yards behind only North Carolina’s T.J. Yates although Ryan has played the tougher schedule. Matt Ryan has led Boston College to a 2 – 0 conference record while most teams don’t even have one conference win.
Tashard Choice, Georgia Tech
The Boston College offense led by Matt Ryan is the second best offense in the ACC. Georgia Tech’s offense is first. While Boston College does it in the air Georgia Tech gets more yards on the ground led by running back Tashard Choice. Tashard Choice is first among ACC running back in yards, almost by a full 100 yards. Choice also ranks 8th in the national in yards although his yards per carry are more than any of the other rushers in the top ten. As long as Tashard Choice keeps running the Yellow Jackets should keep on winning.
T. J. Yates
North Carolina is known for being only a basketball school but the Tarheels are hoping that T. J. Yates can begin to change that. The freshmen quarterback has led North Carolina to only a 1 – 1 start, but has looked good. T. J. Yates leads Preseason ACC Player of the Year Matt Ryan in passing yards. T. J. Yates is 15th in the nation in yards and 7th in QB rating behind names such as Tim Tebow and Brian Brohm and ahead of quarterbacks such as Colt Brennan and Andre Woodson.
