You would think it would be easy having dentures. Well, I have had them for almost 40 years. The first set only lasted 2 years, because my gums shrunk so much. Then it was 5 years. Next time it was 10 years, and a further 10 years. Well, it is coming up for the time when I am starting to think about new ones. These are now 9 years old, and are starting to get loose on me.
Over the years I have tried many different forms, and brands, of adhesive. The most recent one I have been using is Fixodent. The reason being, it was on sale at Wal-Mart, and with my coupon, it was a similar price to their own brand.
Fixodent Complete Denture Adhesive Cream comes in a 2.2 ounce tube. it is white, and has blue and yellow coloring on the front.
I take my dentures out in the morning, and put them in a container of water, with an Equate Cleanser tablet in it. This cleans my dentures, while I am taking my shower. After 15 minutes, or longer, depending on my shower, I take them out of the solution. Next I rinse them under warm water. Then I dry them before using the adhesive.
I unscrew the cap of the Fixodent Complete and then squeeze the tube. I hold the tube above the top dentures, and squeeze a little of the pink adhesive, down the sides of the top dentures, and across the middle. I only put a small amount in each section, because too much would come out of the sides, and then I would have the pink adhesive, in my mouth. That would make me gag. Once done, I then take my top dentures in my hands, and push them into the top of my mouth. I hold them there for a few seconds to make sure they stay.
Unfortunately I cannot do anything about my bottom dentures. My gums have shrunk so much over the years, that only the first bottom plate I had, fitted well. They stay in place without using anything.
Normally the Fixodent adhesive will keep them in place all day, and evening. However, there have been occasions when they have come unstuck. I am not sure if it is because I used too little, or that it just didn’t work as well, that time.
Do not put too much adhesive on your dentures, as the pink adhesive doesn’t have a pleasant taste. It is minty, but has the adhesive that sticks on your tongue, and it is disgusting.
Upon closing the tube of Fixodent adhesive, the cap has a piece of plastic inside of it, so it goes into the tube, and seals it. Therefore the adhesive doesn’t go hard.
Fixodent is as good as Polygrip and Equate brands. I really don’t see a difference in any of them. I have also tried Sea Bond adhesive strips, and I had to cut down the sizes of the strips, because they oozed out.
“Holds dentures firmly in place; less slipping Prevents stain build-up and bad breath Easy-to-use cream formula for simple application Not to be used as compensation for ill-fitting dentures.”
Fixodent works, and it allows me the freedom to eat out and never have to worry about my dentures slipping. I will purchase it again if it is on sale, reduced price, but if not, then I like Equate brand just as much.
Fixodent is a Procter & Gamble product. I couldn’t find a telephone number on their website, but you can email them from the contact page. www.fixodent.com
