Many people agree that Boise State’s win over Oklahoma in college football was the best game played in 2007. I don’t disagree that the Boise State and Oklahoma game was great but I do think college football fans and experts went a little too crazy.
Boise State was not a National Champion contender last season. While the game against Oklahoma was great, it wasn’t as great as people made it out to be for several reasons.
1. Boise State did not prove they were a National Champion contender because they didn’t beat a National Champion contender. Oklahoma was not nearly as good as the National Champion contenders last season like Florida, Ohio State, USC, Michigan and LSU. Oklahoma had a great season because they had a very good team with a very bad conference. Just think about the Big 12 for a minute. Texas became irrelevant the day Vince Young left, Nebraska is no longer any good and Missouri and Kansas were only mediocre teams last season. Oklahoma won the Big 12 last year because they were the only contender.
2. I have no problem with Boise State winning with trick plays. I don’t think trick plays are unsportsmanlike. When you desperately need to win, that’s what you do, and if that’s the only way to win the game then that’s what you do. But Boise State depending on trick plays to win the game does send the message, “hey, we aren’t as good as you, the only way for us to win is trick.” Trick plays look great and their fun, but Florida, Ohio State, Michigan, USC or LSU wouldn’t have needed to resort to trick plays to beat anybody last season.
3. One random Bowl Game never proves anything. Bowl Games will never be a good representation of how good a team actually is because of the long break in between the season and Bowl Games. With that long of a break some teams just don’t show up, so an inferior team that is actually playing hard can win a Bowl Game just by showing up. It even happened in the National Championship game last year. I’m a Florida Gators fan and believed the Gators would win the Championship but even I don’t believe that Florida was 27 points better than Ohio State.
Boise State beating Oklahoma was a great game and a great moment in sports but it did not prove that Boise State should be the National Championship and it did not prove that a team outside of the six major conferences should be considered for the National Championship.
Not only did Boise State not prove they belong in the National Championship but Hawaii hurt their argument, an argument that was already weak to begin with.
Everybody jumped on the Hawaii bandwagon after they went 12 – 0. People were raving about how Hawaii was going to win and about how Georgia and the SEC were overrated and about how Colt Brennan is actually better than Tim Tebow. It was all a bunch of wishful thinking though as Georgia completely demolished Hawaii.
After the game Colt Brennan said in an interview exactly why a team outside of the six major conferences shouldn’t be considered for the National Championship when he said, “I’ve never seen anybody as fast as them.” This tells us a few things. First it tells us that as great as Colt Brennan is as far as an NFL prospect goes, he’s not Tim Tebow or Andre Woodson or even Erik Ainge this season because he couldn’t handle a team from a real conference.
Colt Brennan’s comment also proves that Hawaii shouldn’t be considered for the National Championship because he admits that his team has never played anybody as good as Georgia. Hawaii cruised through an extremely easy schedule and when they finally played a good team they got demolished. Let’s not forget Georgia didn’t even go to their Conference Championship. Georgia was the third place team in the SEC and they destroyed Hawaii. I’m not sure Hawaii would beat Florida, Tennessee or Auburn. Even Alabama and Mississippi State would give them a close game.
Colt Brennan’s comments prove that teams outside of the six major conferences just don’t have the personnel to beat a team from a major conference. Occasionally Hawaii will get a Colt Brennan or Boise State will get an Ian Johnson. But one great player and a few other really good players isn’t going to beat a team from a major conference. Even middle of the road teams in major conferences, like Alabama or Texas A&M, would cruise through schedule that Hawaii had.
One bowl game doesn’t prove anything. Boise State’s win does not make teams outside of the major conferences National Championship contenders. For that to happen then teams outside of the major conferences need to do better than 24- 110 against teams in the major conferences. And the teams they beat weren’t even that good. Out of the 24 wins they had over teams from the major conferences only four were against winning teams, and three of those teams were 7 – 6.
Really horrible teams like Florida International (0 – 5 against teams from major conferences) obviously drag down this record but the point is conferences that aren’t the six major conferences are nowhere close to major conferences in competition. So why should a Hawaii or Boise State be in the National Championship when their conference can only beat a handful of losing teams in major conferences. And why should we expect a Hawaii or Boise State to do any good in their BCS game when they’ve clearly never played anybody like the team they will have to play. Everybody thought for sure Hawaii was going to beat Georgia but apparently a “sure thing” is a team that loses by 31 points.
