Nestled in downtown Louisville, Kentucky is Glassworks, a multi-use facility dedicated to the art of glass. It houses three working glass studios, and two glass galleries with tours of the facility offered daily, as well as a wide variety of classes and ongoing workshops.
The Glassblowing Studio at Glassworks allows artisans to use a 2200 degree Fahrenheit furnace to heat glass before they use tools to gather up and blow the glass into works of art. The Glassblowing Studio can be rented for $30 per hour, which includes all glass and tools needed. In addition the public is invited throughout the year to enter the studio to create their own works of art, for example this October visitors can create a glass blown pumpkin for $50, and during the months of November and December visitors can create their own holiday ornament for $40.
Artisans in the Flameworking Studio use blowtorches fired by gas and oxygen to reshape glass. While artisans in the Architectural Glass Studio use a broad range of techniques to create unique, large scale, custom designed commissions. One of the most recognizable pieces of their work is the large glass ornamental chandelier that hangs in the lobby of the Jewish Hospital Medical Center East.
