This book happens in the 1850’s.
Part 2 Comprehension
12. Did anyone in the book do something you didn’t like?
I didn’t like when Old Orlick tried to kill Mrs. Joe. I didn’t like this because Old Orlick was weird, and tried to kill more people in the book.

This book is comical, and satirical book that has many different genres in it such as it uses romance, suspense, drama, mystery, and many other aspects to make it have different genres.

The author wrote this book to show that a poor boy can be changed into a gentleman, but is still a poor boy at heart.
15. Continue the story.
If I could continue the story, I’d have Pip and Estella get married, and have them become rich and wealthy.
17. Tell the beginning of the book.
The beginning of the book is Pip telling about his life, and how he started his journey to become a gentleman.
19. How did the main character feel during the story?
Pip felt overwhelmed during the story. He loved Estella, but couldn’t see her that much, didn’t know who his benefactor was, and had to help convicts out constantly.
20. What did the title have to do with the book?
The title Great Expectations shows that a man can have big expectations for someone, and it can pay off.
21. Tell how the setting of the story made it more interesting.
The setting made it more interesting as there were many odd places in the book that added to a big surprise of finding out Pip’s odd benefactor.
Part 3 Application
25. What would the main character do if he entered our class?
Pip would act very strange if he were to enter our room. He would be very shy and scared if he visited our class when he was poor. If he visited when he had a benefactor he’d act like a gentleman, and try to impress people.
26. If you had a similar problem to a situation in this book how would you have acted.
If I was like Pip, and was in love with Estella, but also felt affection for Biddy, who came from the same class as me, I’d forget about Estella, and marry Biddy. It would be like not changing to have a girl love you, but still having a girl that loves you.
27. What lesson did you learn from this story?
The lesson that I learned from this story is that if someone that is superior to you tries to change you don’t accept it. They should like you for the way you are. People can’t change people completely.
29. Write a letter recommending this book to a friend.
Do you like to read? Well this is the book fro you. It is great, it’s a mystery/suspense book that is very comical and satirical. Mostly anyone who reads this book would agree that it is a good book to read, as it has many different settings and themes to it that make the story so interesting.
32. What changes would have to be made if it occurred 200 years ago?
The book occurred about 160 years ago, so there wouldn’t have to be that many changes made, other than there would be less industrialization .
Part 4 Analysis
33. If your story happened in a foreign land, compare that to the United States
The United States was less industrialized than England, so the story would be affected by that. There would also be less criminals, so Pip could not have helped his convict that would turn out to be his benefactor.
34. If your story occurred long ago, compare that to today,
If this story occurred in modern times many things would need to be changed. There would have to be cars, and other ways of transportation. Pip could have easily figured out who his benefactor was. There would also be no jail gangs like there were in the book, so Pip may not have even found Magwitch, his benefactor.
37. Write a different ending to the book.
… And so after Pip sees Estella after a long time, he realizes that she is the girl for him. Estella is ecstatic upon seeing Pip, and falls for him after seeing what a gentleman he has become. Pip and Estella marry each other, and live a good long prosperous life, having six children.
40. In a good paragraph state the main idea of this book.
The main idea of this book is that affection and loyalty are more important than wealth and class. A boy tries to change his class to be with the girl he loves, and just ends up ruining his life. Being poor for half you life, and then becoming rich for the other half make you need to change the way you live. Whenever you get a chance to improve on your self for anything you should think about how it will make you change.
41. Compare this book to the last book you read.
This book compared to “The Tragedy Of Pudd’nhead Wilson” is very different, other than they occurred in the 1850’s and were in small towns. The main character in Pudd’nhead learns that he should never live a lie, and the main character in Great Expectations learns that he should’ve never tried to change the quality of his life. The books both do use some comical, and satirical language, but are very different kinds of books.
Part 5 Synthesis
43. What part of the story would you change, and why?
I would like to change the end of the story. Pip throughout the whole book was trying to get with Estella, and failed to. At the end of the story when they meet after a long time, Estella sees how much Pip has changed from a poor boy to a rich man. Pip also sees that Estella has changed, but still seems to have affection for her. I would change this part of the story, because I think it would be better if they both got married after they both changed dramatically though there lifetime.
47. Write a poem about the book.
Poem written from Pips expectations that he would get to marry Estella.
Expecting something great
To come of this.
Only to be torn and start to realize that I miss
The opportunity of carrying Estella’s weight.
