Many people today have a fascination with ninjas. Is it their ability to sneak around undetected? Is it their cool black outfits? Is it their ability to take out an entire army? I don’t know why we love ninjas so much but we do. If you’re going to be a ninja fan you must know a little bit about them, like what kind of gear they wear.
The ninja-yoroi is that cool outfit you see ninjas wear. The ninja-yoroi includes the black jacket, black pants, sandals and a cowl. Most of the time ninjas would wear a black ninja-yoroi so they could sneak around at night undetected but some ninjas were also known for wearing white in snowy areas.
The ninjato is the type of sword that a ninja usually carries. Some might think it is a katana that ninjas use but katanas are actually the common sword of choice for samurai. The Ninjato comes in many sizes but the most common ninjato is actually much shorter than the katana. Ninjas are also sometimes thought to use katanas because they would fit their ninjato with a katana handle and a katana sheath. The ninjas did that so that their opponent would think they were drawing a katana, which is much longer and therefore takes longer to draw, but the ninja would actually draw a much shorter sword much faster.
A shuko is a weapon that is worn on your hand. A shuko is much like brass knuckles except that it has spikes on it. The shuko could be used for hand-to-hand combat but was also used for climbing up the sides of buildings.
If you’ve never heard of a shuriken then you’ve probably heard of them by their other name, throwing stars. Throwing stars are actually a type of shuriken though because stars are not the only thing ninjas throw. Ninjas also have shuriken that are knife or dagger shaped.
Ninjas would often use several different mixtures of gunpowder for weapons. The most common example of a ninja’s use of gunpowder is in smoke bombs. Ninjas also made small bombs called metsubushi that would contain sand and dust. The ninjas were also capable of setting a timer on projectiles in order to make them go off at a certain time.
A lesser known part of the ninja’s gear was called an ashiaro. An ashiaro was a wooden pad that the ninja would wear on their feet. The ashiaro was either shaped like an animal’s foot or a child’s foot. That way the ninja didn’t have to worry about leaving tracks because they would suspect something other than an animal or child.
The shobo is another piece of ninja equipment you don’t often see. The shobo is a small ring a ninja would wear. The shobo had a small piece of wood on it. During hand to hand combat the ninja would use the small piece of wood sticking out of the ring to hit pressure points on their opponent, often causing paralysis.
Those are most of the items used by a ninja. Considering what we know about ninjas it is no surprise that none of these weapons are necessarily large dangerous weapons but instead items that can help sneak around unnoticed.
