Hamburgers are one America’s favorite foods and homemade hamburgers simply can’t be beat. But, what if you’re out of hamburger buns? Or, what if you have a small household and will never use eight hamburger buns before they go bad? Luckily, there are several alternatives. Not only do these alternatives work perfectly for big or small families, but some of these alternatives actually add additional flavor. Here are some of my favorite hamburger bun alternatives.
Hamburger Bun Alternatives #1: Garlic Bread
One of my favorite hamburger bun alternatives is garlic bread. Garlic bread adds an amazing flavor. This is an especially good choice if you make a pizza burger. To make a pizza burger you simply add hot pasta sauce and mozzarella cheese to your fully cooked hamburger patty. Place the burger under the broiler until the cheese melts and then serve on thick garlic toast.
Hamburger Bun Alternatives #2: Tortillas
This alternative is far from traditional, but I discovered it’s one of the best ways to serve hamburgers when there are only two people in the house. Instead of cooking patties, I crumble the ground beef and when it’s finished I add it to a tortilla that has mayonnaise and shredded cheddar cheese. I roll it up like a wrap and serve with potato chips. It’s delicious.
Hamburger Bun Alternatives #3: Pita Bread
Another hamburger bun alternative that adds flavor is pita bread. Onion flavored pita bread is wonderful with burgers. Just make sure to get the large pita bread loaves or you will rip the bread while trying to fit the patty in.
Hamburger Bun Alternatives #4: French Baguette
I love the texture of a French baguette and surprisingly enough it works well as a hamburger bun alternative. All you need to do is cut your patty in half, once it’s cooked, so that it fits on the baguette.
Hamburger Bun Alternatives #5: Brown and Serve Rolls
If you’re having a party, why not consider making mini cheeseburgers? Instead of fighting with large hamburger buns, consider this alternative. Simply bake the rolls and then cut in half. The patties will fit on there perfectly and the taste of the butter, from the rolls, with the beef is fabulous.
Hamburger Bun Alternatives #6: Sandwich Bread
If all you have is white bread, don’t worry about it. Make patty melts. All you need to do is fully cook your patty and then follow the steps for making a grilled cheese. In a pan, place a buttered piece of bread, butter side down. Then add a slice of cheese, the patty, another slice of cheese, and another piece of buttered bread. Cook on both sides until golden brown.
Hamburger Bun Alternatives #7: Portobello Mushroom Caps
If you want a low carb alternative, use Portobello mushroom caps. Just cook the mushroom caps until they are tender and then place on your patty and other toppings. With this alternative, you’ll never miss the hamburger bun.
Hamburger Bun Alternatives #8: Lettuce
One other alternative is lettuce. Simply wrap lettuce leaves around your patty and enjoy. Surprisingly enough this really is a tasty alternative to hamburger buns.
