On Saturday, September 9, 2007 hamsters across the country will be revving their tiny furry engines as they compete in the PetCo Animal Supplies Annual Hamster Ball Derby. Hamster owners and enthusiasts are encouraged to participate or simply cheer on the rodent racers.
The free event will begin at 1:30pm at participating PetCo pet stores across the country. A practice warm-up session will kick off the festivities at 1:30pm for those wishing to get a few test rolls in on the Hamtrac before the main event. The actual Hamster Ball Derby races begin at 2:00pm. Children as well as critter loving adults are encouraged to attend.
Attendees will sign-in at PetCo on race day and be given a position in the line-up. When it is your pet’s turn, you will place him in a plastic racing ball and allow him to traverse the plastic Hamtrac. The hamster with the fastest time down the designated track will win! (However, if your hamster turns around and runs the wrong direction, you may need to give him a little pep talk!) Cheering, encouraging advice and giggling children can usually be heard track-side at this PetCo event!
Move Over Hamsters!
New to this year’s event will be an additional race. The first ever Critter Run will immediately follow the Hamster Ball Derby. For the first time our other furry friends can get in on the racing action too! The new race will allow pet gerbils, guinea pigs, mice, rats and chinchillas to test their race skills in a plastic racing ball. (Ferrets, rabbit and exotic animals are excluded from participating in the Critter Run.)
Participants must provide their own racing ball of appropriate size for their pet. PetCo sells the plastic balls in varying colors and sizes in the Small Animal Department.
Participants are encouraged to bring their pet to the event in a travel cage, complete with water and food, since they will be away from their home environment for a few hours for the day’s events. A travel cage will give your critter a comfortable place to relax before and after the races.
No pet should be left in a plastic racing ball for an extended period of time. Although they have ventilation holes, playtime in the plastic balls should be limited to ten minute increments.
After the days events, PetCo encourages critter owners to allow your pet to have a relaxing evening without much playtime. Too much excitement can stress small critters and make them sick.
Prizes, Discounts and Fun, Oh My!
Prizes will be awarded to the three speediest hamsters in the Hamster Ball Derby and the top two critters in the Critter Run.
