Summertime is finally here and I’m sure you have lots of exciting activities planned! What about your best friend? Nows a great time of year to have some dog fun with your faithful companion. There are more and more opportunities for you and your dog to enjoy summertime activities together since many hotels and restaurants are allowing dogs on the premises. So grab a leash and your best friend and give some of these activities a try:
1. Take a long hike.
Pick a dog friendly hiking trail and head out for a relaxing hike in the woods. Bring along some granola bars for you and some healthy dog treats for your companion. Be sure to bring plenty of water as dogs can become dehydrated quite easily. Stop somewhere along the trail and share some quality time with your best friend with lots of ear massages and tummy rubs. It’ll be a relaxing afternoon you’ll remember for a long time.
2. Head out to your nearest dog park.
Dog parks are the rage these days with people bringing their pets together in a neutral location to congregate and play. It’s a great way to burn off some of Fido’s excess energy and keep his weight under control. You’ll meet lots of other friendly dog lovers and their faithful companions as well. Again, be sure to bring lots of water. The summer sun and lots of raucous play can make your dog thirsty very fast!
3. Make a trip to a pet friendly pet store.
More and more pet stores are being designed to be dog friendly. Your dog will enjoy walking up and down the aisles surrounded by all those bones, treats, and other tempting doggiy goodies! Plus, you can get some shopping done. One of the nicest pet stores for visiting with your dog is Pets Mart, if you have one in your area. I wonder when they’ll start offering doggy massages in these places?
4. Enjoy a trip to a dog friendly outdoor cafe.
Many outdoor cafes will allow you to eat lunch outdoors with your best friend. It can be a relaxing way to spend a lunch hour. Only problem is Fido’s going to want some of that lunch! Be sure to bring along some doggy treats!
5. Share a meal outdoors with your best friend.
Beautiful summer days are a great time to plan a picnic for you and your dog. Bring along a big basket full of sandwiches, fruit, and cookies along with some of Fido’s favorite treats and head for a green pasture. Don’t forget the cooler of soft drinks for you, water for your dog and the blanket to lay out your picnic. You’ll return from your jaunt deliciously full and relaxed.
6. Head to the lake.
If you have a labrador or a golden retriever, you know how much they love water! A trip to the lake is just what the veterinarian ordered for these water crazy dogs! Sit by the lake with a large stick for your dog to retrieve.Throw it into the water and watch him take the plunge! It’s great exercise for your best friend and relaxing for you to watch. Why not bring along a picnic and make a day of it?
7. Treat your dog to a day at doggy day care.
If you have a doggy day care facility in your area, sign your dog up for a day. He’ll have an exciting day of playing and socializing with other dogs and will come home tired and happy. It’s good exercise and teaches your dog how to relate well to other dogs.
Hope this gives you some ideas for dog fun this summer! It’s a great way for you and your dog to bond.
