What better way to include a canine companion in the holiday festivities than to create a gift basket designed just for them? The size of the basket, of course, is up to you. If Fido is a small dog, you may want to choose a cute dog bed to hold your gifts. For larger dogs, a wicker basket in the appropriate size will do.
Fill the basket with all, or some, of the following items.
Rawhide Treats: Dogs love rawhide. It provides them with hours of chewing and keeps them from chewing on household objects. Check to make sure you are buying the correct size for the dog.
Chew Toys: These come in the form of rubber toys that have been designed with a dog’s strong jaw in mind. Keep in mind that a large dog can destroy a small chew toy in a matter of minutes. Choose toys that are appropriate for the size of the dog.
Kong Jawrobics Dog Toys: These come in a black version suited for large dogs with superior jaw strength and chewing ability and three different sized red Kongs for medium to small dogs. The center of the Kong is hollow and is great for filling with treats. Peanut butter is a favorite with this toy. The dog will chew for hours to get the treat out of the Kong. This toy also bounces and rolls for hours of entertainment.
Tennis Balls: Dog Lovers can never have too many tennis balls. Buy brightly colored balls that will show up will in the grass. Obviously, the dog doesn’t care what color they are because he sees in black and white anyway, but this will help the humans in the dog’s life spot the ball in the grass.
Tug of War Rope: There are many kinds of ropes available that are made specifically for dog toys. Buy one that has a good grip for the owner and does not splinter or cause damage to either the dog or the owner.
Dog Treats and Dog Biscuits:
Dog Treats are labeled as such and serve as a nice reward for training, teaching new tricks, or just plain rewarding appropriate behavior. Dog Biscuits are simply a nice little snack for the dog to enjoy. Although they can be used for training the dog, most dog owners reserve them for a daily snack. The dog lover in your life will certainly appreciate a box of either.
Leash: Every dog needs a good leash. These need to be replaced periodically. What better time to replace it than Christmas. Check with the dog lover to see what kind of leash he prefers. Any dog lover will surely be thankful to have a spare leash. It is always nice to have a replacement stored away for when it is needed. Take special note of the size and weight of the dog and purchase the appropriate size leash for that particular dog. One size does not fit all.
Collar: Again, every dog needs a collar. These too come in a variety of sizes. Make sure you purchase the correct size for the dog.
Brush: Dogs are notorious for shedding. To keep their dog’s coat free of shedding hair and to maintain a glossy sheen, the dog lover needs a good quality dog brush. Stick to brand names here and purchase from a company you know is reliable. Cheap dollar store brushes don’t always function as promised and can even cause pain to the dog with teeth that scratch or dig into the skin.
Brush Mitt: These are designed for the dog lover to wear on his hand and brush shedding hair away as he pets the dog.
Dog Toenail Clippers: If your dog lover is a do-it-yourself groomer then toenail clippers designed specifically for a dog is a must.
Dog Shampoo: For bath day, every dog lover needs some dog shampoo. Here again, avoid dollar store varieties and purchase shampoo from a reliable company. Cheap shampoo will often cause skin irritations and dry skin on dogs.
Flea collar: This is a must for any dog that spends time outside. A flea collar will never go to waste and the dog lover will be grateful to have one on hand when the inevitable time comes when he will need it.
Gift Certificate to the Groomer: Even if the dog lover in your life is a do-it-yourself groomer, a certificate to a dog groomer will be appreciated. Every dog lover wants to take his or her dog to the groomer, at least occasionally. This will provide the dog lover in your life the luxury of having his dog groomed and nails clipped without having to do it himself.
Gift Certificate to the Vet: A gift certificate to the Vet is always welcomed. Dog lovers invest a lot of time and money into their dogs. Maintaining proper health is a necessary expense.
Providing Uncle Pete with a basket of goodies specifically designed with Fido in mind is sure to be a big hit for the holidays. Not only will Fido be well taken care of, Uncle Pete will know how much you really care.
