This flick starring Ben Affleck is the portrayal of a private investigator following the root and cause of George Reeves’ suicide, which previously is suspected of being a homicide case by the PI and George Reeves’ mother. The investigator, Louis Simo, is a down-on-luck scoundrel who will do anything to turn a buck. Like spying on an innocent wife for adultery and taking advantage of the media as he wheels a mother’s wheelchair into her dead son’s bedroom.
The movie follows both the story of the PI and the actor who becomes Superman. Louis Simo does give a convincing argument to suspect murder from Reeves’ death. Such as the lack of prints on the lugar used and the bruises acquired before Superman’s death. The only thing missing is the motivation.
Thus, the story of George Reeves takes on a larger roll. It starts with the man seducing a well-connected woman in order to boost his acting career. What he gets is a free house and an audition to play America’s super hero. Eventually the man gets bored with his dull mistress and anxious for a better career that his mistress only seems to hinder now than encourage. So he marries a younger more ravishing woman and attempts to go into directing film. Unfortunately he is blockaded by the money makers in Hollywoodland, one of which is husband to Reeves’ old affair, and subject to ridicule by his new bride.
A very intriguing aspect of the film is how Simo imagines possible death scenarios for the depressed actor. The first scenario is a brawl between George Reeves and his wife who accidentally shoots the man. It mostly makes sense, as the couple did not get along by any means. The second scenario portrays a hitman assassinating Reeves in the name of the film industry. This was also possible, but not likely as the main film producer may be a power-hungry man, but he is no murderer. The final scenario is the simple suicide of George Reeves after he serenades his guests with a Latin song.
Simo begins to understand the motif behind Reeves’ suicide. After losing his clients, one of which he discovers to be a murderer, after losing his son, and after submerging himself in alcoholism and chain smoking, Simo starts to realize just how far over the edge he is. And how obsessions can lead to things like suicide. The movie ends with Simo apparently trying to wise up and make amends with his son who he had embarrassed with his reckless behavior. After all, he is nothing if Superman can die.
The movie was overall descent. It was a tad unsettling to hear Ben Affleck’s weak forties’ accent, but he did a good job acting for the most part. Especially in times of inebriated wackiness. Though I believe the best scenes were with Simo as the acting was terrific and his journey drove Reeves’ journey. It also seemed to add perspective and substance to Superman’s suicide.
