This winter my whole family came down with a horrible flu or cold bug. It was so bad that it had my sister barely able to breath or cough. Because of this, my mom took her to Moss Regional’s ER.
They admitted her and it took awhile for things to get done.
Moss Regional is supposedly a learning hospital. It is in a decent location for access to all people in Lake Charles and is easy to find. However, the hallways are poorly marked and directions to each of the areas is quite poor.
I know this from trying to find my sister and also from job interviews that I have had there.
The staff at Moss Regional does not get the idea of an interview. Instead, they assume that a person should know everything about the position already without any information given when the interview invite comes in the social service. They also expect clerks or secretaries to be able to do the job of medical students.
The staff did a good job at being concerned with what the problems with my sister. They were observant and since she could not talk, they even asked if she was mute. This was not the case as she could not talk because she could not breath. However, it is good that they were observant.
After an EKG that showed an enlarged heart, Moss Regional wanted to send my sister to Lake Charles Memorial Hospital.
They did a very poor job of monitoring my sister after she was in the waiting area.
She was hooked up to the monitors, but the nurses never paid attention to any of the beeping or other sounds that came from the monitors. They paid no attention to if she needed anything.
We could hear other people having to take medicine and the staff simply saying that it would hurt and that they needed to drink all of the liquid. Instead of being encouraging, they would yell back at the patients.
Thankfully, they did not need to yell at my sister. My mom and I were there with her and would do crosswords out loud by reading clues or simply have fun with words or talking.
They did a poor job of being able to find her Medicaid information as well. She does have it and she gave them her SSN. However, they still could not find it. Even days afterwards when my mom and sister brought her information, they still sent her a bill that should have been taken care of through Medicaid.
So, it is good that Moss Regional exists for those who do not have health care or need a very quick trip to the ER. However, it is definitely not one of the best hospitals or one of the best ERs that exist in Lake Charles.
It is better to go to Christus St. Patrick if it can be afforded.
