College sororities have poor stigmas attached to them due to media attention and the actions of a few groups. Sororities are designed in their purest intention to aid and help young college girls through their young years. There are many benefits for freshmen girls to consider before joining a sorority; this article will take a look at the benefits of joining a college sorority as a freshmen. I asked the help of my friend Kristen who is in Delta Phi Epsilon for some help with this article; I am a fraternity brother in TKE so I have seen the benefits sororities have for young women. Freshman year is arguably the most stressful year during college; not because of the work, but because of the social stress. Most freshmen are eager to meet new people and make friends, and what better way to meet friends than to join a sorority. Joining a sorority is unlike joining any other group on campus; you will make close lifelong friends that will always have your back, participate in community service, and have a place and group to relax with on the weekends. Freshmen year can bring lots of social anxiety; however belonging to a sorority can release much of this stress.
Stress is one of the biggest issues for college students; every student will be stressed at one point, which can lead to weight gain, depression, and poor work performance. Joining a college sorority can help a young woman gain confidence, and also help with school work from other girls in the same majors. Sorority sisters are always there for one another, whether it may be a bad break up or a bad grade; the sister’s support each other. Dealing with a break up or having trouble in school can lead to lots of stress and even depression if it continues; having a group of best friends that can help you out no matter the problem can take a lot of stress off college life.
The friends you make at your sorority will be vast in number and lifelong. The bonds a college student will make with their fellow female pledges and older sisters will last for many years after college. Networking with these girls can help you get a job upon graduation. Belonging to a national sorority helps your job application stand out; since many recruiters belong to either fraternities or sororities.
Sororities are a great way to get involved at your local college or university. The sisters are welcoming and want to make lifelong friendships. Not only will you have the time of your life after being initiated, but you will also keep these friends for years to come. Sororities let girls be a part of something great at their college where they will network and meet many new people. Kristen told me that joining a sorority was the best decision she made as a freshmen. Don’t let the best days of your life be shadowed by what could have been!
