BEFORE YOU BEGIN
In order for your Reiki experience to be without any unexpected hurdles, it is important to share with you some of the legal situations that are important to know. If you plan to practice your Reiki professionally, you could encounter a few regulations. Depending on the state you reside in, there may be laws passed by the Massage Therapist Board stating that any Reiki Practitioner, who practices professionally, must be a Licensed Massage Therapist. To see if there are such laws in your state you can call the Massage Therapist Board or visit this website: www.sacredpath.org/html/reiki/legal/mtlstateleg.html
A wonderful loophole around the state regulations is to become an ordained minister. The Constitution of the United States asserts that any U.S. civilian practicing spiritual or religious beliefs is protected by law. Reiki is spiritual in its nature and becoming ordained may be a wonderful step for those of you that feel drawn to do so. To become ordained you can visit this website: www.theuniversallight.com
Lastly, it is important to know that it is illegal to “diagnose”, “advise”, “recommend”, and “prescribe”. Only Licensed Medical Doctors may use these terms legally, and doing so may put you in a risky position. Reiki is a spiritual art, not a way of diagnosing a disease or a claim to be able to “cure” anyone of a disease.
HISTORY OF REIKI
Reiki (Ray-key) means Universal Life Force Energy in Japanese. Another way of saying this is Spiritually-Guided Energy. The word Reiki has two meanings: Rei means the Inner Self or Higher Power, and Ki means the Life Force Energy. I believe that Ki is the same energy as quantum energy. It is in everything and everyone, and unites all things in its ever flowing essence. Ki is unlimited and available to anyone for healing and renewal of life energy. The combination of Ki with the Higher Mind creates Reiki, the most incredibly potent source of energy healing available.
It is not fully known what the true origins Reiki are. It is known, however, that Dr. Mikao Usui rediscovered Reiki in the late 1800’s. Dr. Usui (pronounced ew-sew-ee) traveled extensively in order to find out the most powerful healing methods. He traveled to the West to find out the secret healing methods of Jesus, which he did not. He then traveled back to Japan to deeply study Buddhism and find out if there were healing methods hidden within this ancient practice. Unfortunately, none of his teachers would reveal the healing methods they knew, so he decided to seek out the knowledge directly from the source…through Divine Inspiration from the Universal Intelligence. In a retreat by Mt. Kurama, Dr. Usui, while fasting for 21 days, it said that the Reiki energy struck him in his third eye, leaving him unconscious. During his unconscious state he was attuned to the Reiki energy, at which time he was shown the Reiki symbols and their uses. Upon awakening, he immediately rushed to find his teacher, to tell him of his great discovery, when he hit his toe against a rock. Instinctively, he placed his hands upon his wound and the wound healed extraordinarily quickly. After that, he stopped to eat at a restaurant and proceeded to eat a huge meal. After fasting for 21 days this meal should have made him very ill, but he had no pain or discomfort of any kind. The woman who was waiting on him in the resuraunt happened to be sick, and he was able to heal her. Once arriving back at the temple where he was studying, he found his teacher to be bedridden with sickness. He was able to heal him as well. These four situations were known as the “4 miracles”.
While continuing his energy work on others, Dr. Usui began to realize that sometimes the methods would work better on people who were more open to receiving the Reiki energy.
THE PRINCIPLES OF REIKI
These are the Reiki Principles as found in Dr. Usui’s student handbook.
The secret art of inviting happiness
The miraculous medicine of all diseases
Just for today, do not be angry
Do not worry and be filled with gratitude
Devote yourself to your work and be kind to people
Every morning and evening, join your hands in prayer,
Pray these words to your heart,
And chant these words with your mouth
