After spending freshman year constantly running from my dorm to my professor’s mailbox just minutes before the mailroom closed and the paper was due, I figured that there must be a better way. I was just completely tired of wearing out my running shoes, and by about junior year I figured out how to win the game. There is a way to get an extension on a college research paper without risking your reputation of being an A-list student one bit.
Begin with a good impression.
Getting an extension on a college paper begins before the paper is due. It even begins before the assignment is handed out. The first step to getting an extension on a college research paper begins on the first day of classes. I cannot stress enough about presentation. It can get you very far in life. Therefore, when you walk into the classroom on the first day of classes, smile. You do not have to be a kiss up student or anything. You just have to be the symbol of quality and remain that way until the last day of classes.
Participate in discussions.
Become and remain a frequent asker of good questions and a person who comments when other people ask questions. Even if you have not finished doing the reading, you should at least look like you got through as much as you could. Doing this will give your professor the impression that you are enjoying and putting forth an effort in his or class. Therefore, when a problem arises your professor will be more likely to have sympathy for you.
Go to office Hours
Office hours may not be your college’s formal name of “after class time” spent with the professor. However, at my college, this time was called office hours, and you probably know what I am talking about. Office hours are held for students who have further questions or insight concerning what is being studied in class. However, office hours are also for students who would like to subtly let their professor know that they are attentive and that they care about what is going on in the class. They care enough to make time in their schedule to sit and chat. Unconsciously or on purpose, the professor will be giving you extra student points for this move.
If you have done the three things listed above sincerely and well, you should have no problem being favored by your professor. Then, when the time comes and you have stayed up all night trying to get the research paper done and you just somehow could not get finished, all you have to do email your dear old professor. You might be quite surprised at how he or she responds.
The only problem you may find with these steps is the word “sincerely” mentioned in the last paragraph. You may have a problem with this word because truthfully, you cannot sincerely care about the class you are in without putting in all of your effort to get the research papers done well and on time. Therefore, when you read this article, you should not read it as a scheme, but as a back up plan because if you approach the first day of classes with a scheme on your mind, the professor may pick that up. Then your sincerity is out of the window.
