Have you been told that you are Bipolar and wondered what people meant by this?
Stop wondering and read some information on this subject.
The term Bipolar at one time had a different name. You may have heard the phrase, Manic Depressive. As this name indicates, this described a person who had two opposing personalities. They were manic or extremely happy for either a short period of time or for a long time. At the opposite end of the pole, this person who has this condition, becomes depressive. They switch from one emotion to the other more often than the person who does not have this disorder. Also, these two emotions are excessive. When they express happiness, they show it in a stronger way than the average person. When they are depressed, they are extremely depressed. In other words, they express these two opposing emotions in a very strong manner.
The person who has this mental disease can be very difficult to live with because they can become extremely unreasonable. I have a friend who is bi-polar and you can’t help but notice that she expresses herself quite differently than a person who does not have this disorder. When she is in a depressed mood, she shows it in a very extreme manner. She becomes extremely depressed and has no interest in anything. At other times, she becomes extremely happy. She shows it in the manner in the way she speaks. She’s excited, becomes very exuberant and has a lot of excessive energy. When she is in this stage, She loves to shop. She’ll shop and shop for thing she does not even need.
It is stated that Bipolar Disorder is sometimes difficult to diagnose because the signs and symptoms of this disease may not be obvious. We all get angry at times. We get sad at other times, and sometimes we feel very happy and show it in our behavior.
The difference between the normal behavior and those who have this disorder is the intensity of the various emotions. People who are Bipolar show their moods more intensely and more often. They go from one mood to the other and both emotions are extreme.
Some signs and symptoms when a person is manic or in a euphoria mode are: very energetic, restless, extremely irritable or angry, rapid speech, needing little sleep, poor judgment , excessive spending, increased sexual drive, increased use of alcohol and drugs. From my experience, this type of person can be extremely unreasonable.
A Bipolar person can show depression in some of the following ways: intense sadness, feeling worthless, loss of energy, loss of interest, and sleeping too much. They also have thoughts of suicide.
With proper treatment, most people with this disorder have periods when they have no symptoms, although some people may continue to have milder symptoms.
It is important to get medical help for this type of disorder. Life can become easier for this person and for the people who he/she associates with. There are medications and Psychosocial therapy that can help immensely.
