People move all the time changing apartments every year or so and moving all your things for one place to another being in the same city, different cities or states or even countries can be a hassle. But there are ways to organize the process and make your move and life a little easier.
The first thing to do is to start planning two months ahead of time. For example eight weeks before the big event start getting estimates from movers and if the price seems extremely low before hiring them ask them questions such as if there are extra charges for anything else, like man power, size of truck or anything. Then check out the companies you called on the Better Business Bureau site, it helps make your decision if you are unsure between two of the five estimates. If you are moving in the same city, you may ask friends and relatives to help you on that date, and if anyone has a bigger truck make sure to pay for gas and offer them lunch as they are doing you a favor.
At week six look at your new floor plan with all the measurements and try to decide where you are going to arrange your furniture, if the place is smaller than your actual one you can either sell or donate your extra furniture or clothing. Also at this point you can do your change of address at either the post office or online but online it costs a $1.00 to do it.
At week four is when the stressful process begins and it is when you start getting boxes and start packing. This process will take more than a week and will be finished on your moving date, but make sure to label the boxes with numbers and the rooms that they need to go in.
the week two before the big event date, it is time to disconnect your utilities or have them get transferred to your new place depending where you are moving to, and if you are driving to another city or state make sure to get your car checked, your oil, your tires and everything else.
A week before your move date make sure you have all your medication for at least two weeks and food supplies such as water and bread (of course this depends how far you are moving). Make copies of your new keys and make sure your financial institutions know your new address.
Two days before the dreaded or exciting day check over the list and make sure you have everything ready and also put your valuables aside in a hand bag or a small luggage that you will move yourself.
The day of the move be prepared to help moving boxes to make everything faster (as most movers charge by the hour) and easier and make to a double or triple check in your apartment or house to make sure you did not leave anything behind.
If you went with a moving company, make sure to read carefully the receipt or contract they are giving you and check the price before signing and paying.
This is a process to make your move less stressful, and if it helps create a spreadsheet for all these things and divide them in different weeks, so that when the day comes you will not be too frustrated.
