In today’s computer crazy world, printers are of used a lot. Actually, more than a lot-a ton! After all, with some many people wanting to save records of their payments online, pictures they’ve taken with their digital cameras, essays, Associated Content articles, and the lot, printers are used every day in many homes and offices. With this intense printer usage comes one very big issue: ink is expensive! A refill of black or color ink can often cost more than a printer! What can a consumer do with in this nasty situation?
I’ve heard that printer companies often will sell their printers at very low prices, include ink with it, and actually lose some money on each printer sold. However, they will then make all this money back, plus a whole lot more, when you have to come back to them to buy more ink. If you are using a cheap $20 printer, it actually might be more cost efficient to just buy another printer of the same model, as the ink included in it, and the printer, is cheaper than buying more ink. However, this does generate quite a bit of waste, especially since printers aren’t exactly small.
Secondly, you could just do what everyone else seems to do, and buy more ink, at normal prices, or online, at slightly cheaper prices. There’s a lot of refurbished ink websites that sell for a few dollars or so less than the usual price of ink at a store. However, I’ve had a few issues with reliability of these refurbished ones, and would urge caution. Plus, given shipping and handling costs, you’ll still end up spending quite a bit.
The third option is visit a local ink refill location, like Island Inkjets in many malls, with your empty cartridges, and has them refill them for you. This option is pretty cheap, but you’ve got to go out of your way to bring your ink with you to them, so it’s not exactly perfect. However, it is cheaper (generally) then just buying more brand new ink.
The last option, and the one I am a fan of, is refilling your cartridges yourself. An ink refill kit is the easiest way to do this, and it will save you A LOT of money. Be careful, as it may be somewhat messy. If you do it right, you can avoid the mess, and save money. Basically, you can pick up ink refill kits at many dollar stores, or online. Then, take the freshly empty and used ink cartridge, and take a little hand drill bit, a small one that is sharp. Using your fingers, simply drill into the holding area of the ink, and then squirt the ink that your refill kit came with into the hole.
Cover the hole with a bit of paper and tape, and you should be good to go. Note-I’m not responsible for any damage that this may cause to your clothing, to you, or to your printer, or to anything or anyone else using this method. It’s really easy to do, but you do need to have a good idea where ink is held in printing cartridge, so you don’t accidentally drill into other parts of the cartridge. Also, the cartridge needs to be somewhat freshly used, and hasn’t dried up after it ran out, or the ink sponges inside won’t work. If you can figure out how to do this, you’ll save a lot of money, as the ink refill kits I’ve seen at dollar stores are only …one dollar!
Hopefully, these tips will help you save money, and frustration, when it comes to buying new ink cartridges! Enjoy!
