Many individuals this time of the year are adding sheds to their backyard. They use them for storage of gardening items, children’s toys, tools, plants, animals, and even as a children’s playhouse. The first thing that you have to do is decide what your backyard shed is for.
Consider this. What will it be used for now and what will it be used for in the future. For example, a friend of mine used his shed as a playhouse for his children until they out grew it. Then he moved in and made it a reading building for himself. It is like a miniature library. He even lets his neighbors use it for the same reason. There are many reasons besides storage, why someone puts in a backyard shed.
Once you have a purpose for your shed, you have to decide how you will put one in your backyard and where will it go.
Sheds come in many shapes and sizes. There are metal sheds, wood sheds, and even brick laid sheds. If you go with a brick laid shed, the chance of moving it in your yard is next to impossible. So you must know where it works best.
Metal and wooden sheds come in one piece or in a kit. A good carpenter can easily make his own. He can make it the way he wants. It is very easy to go to Lowe’s or Home Depot and select a shed. They will even deliver and place it where you want it.
If you go with a metal shed, you can plan on painting it at least every two years. Heat and cold weather will take it’s toll on the paint. Metal can get very hot and cold. Wood is great for a backyard shed. The paint will hold to the grain better than metal.
Whether you build or have a shed placed in your backyard, you have to select a good place for it to go. If it is for children to play in, place it were you can view it from your house. If it is for gardening, it is common sense to place it close to the garden area. You can add to the value of your property with shed. Strategically placed, it can make your property look better. You can place a wooden shed in a wooded area to give a rustic appearance to it. A shaded area helps to protect it from the sun’s rays. If you use it to store plants, a shaded area is a good idea.
A wooden shed should also be at least 4 to 6 inches off the ground. This will help prevent rotting from wet grounds. You can place it on a slab of concrete or elevate it on railroad ties. A great idea is to add a ramp to the front door. If you store lawn mowers or wheelbarrows in it, you will be glad that you did.
If you decide to run electricity to your shed, think about running it underground. Yes, you might mess up your lawn at first. But the reduction in overhead wires can make your backyard appearance better and safer.
