A product update news release is a short, but concise product pitch that is released to news agencies as a news release. This type of news release includes information about what changes have been made to a product, why they were made and how they impact the product’s quality. You can use product update news releases to develop brand awareness, to increase website traffic and to increase your sales.
Step #1 – Create a List of Facts
The first step in writing a news release is to create a list of facts about your product’s update. You will want to include all of the features that were eliminated, the features that were upgraded or changed and the new features that were added. Your list of facts will also include information about when the changes are to go into affect and if the price will be impacted.
Step #2 – List the Five “Ws”
Now that you have your facts in order you will need to identify the five Ws of journalism, the who, what, when, where and why. The who for your product update will include both the manufacturer of the product and your website. The what will be the product name and the updates that were made to the product. The when will describe when the update will go into affect, or when the new updated product will be available at your store. The where will be the location of your store, either the physical address of your store or the URL for your e-store. Finally the why will describe why the updates were made, for example, to improve safety or efficiency of the product.
Step #3 – Draft Your Product Update News Release
The next step is to draft your product update news releases. You will start with the date you are delivering your news release to the media. Then include two blank lines before starting your text. You will then provide the who, what, when, where and why that you came up in steps #1 and #2. You need to format your text so that it doesn’t sound like a commercial but a news story. This means focus on the facts, keep wording simple and straight forward and don’t embellish.
Step #4 – Revise for Clarity
Review what you wrote and make sure that it is simple and straight to the point. The fewer words the better. Try to keep descriptive words to a minimum and use them only to describe the updates. Also check your product update for spelling, punctuation and grammar errors.
Step #5 – Submit Your News Release to the Media
After your news release is perfected you will need to submit it to the media for publication. You can email, fax or mail your news release to newspapers and online news sources, as well as publish it on your website. The great thing about news releases is that they are published for free, if the news agent picks it up and approves it.
