Over the last few months we have heard more and more Presidential candidates from the Democratic Party pressing about how much they hate Fox News. Some of them, such as Hilary Rodham Clinton, have gone so far as to say that Fox News is one of the worst enemies of the Democrats. Why does Fox News have such a poor reputation amongst liberals?
Rupert Murdoch is the owner of News Corporation, which in turn owns Fox News. Murdoch has come under fire multiple times for trying to bring more of a corporate aspect to news. His critics state that he tries to have the news influenced for his own personal or political gains.
Critics of Fox News point out that there is more time spent reporting from a conservative standpoint then there is from a liberal standpoint on the channel. They point out that there is more time pushing news that will make the Republicans look good, and the Democrats look bad.
One argument that supports this is a recent study that was done by the Project for Excellence in Journalism. This report shows that Fox News spends a lot less time reporting about the war then any other news channel on TV. According to the study, the war only takes up about 6% of the airtime on Fox News, while it takes up 18% on MSNBC, and 20% on CNN.
The Democrats are using this study to further their arguments against Fox News. The Democrats are trying to point out that Fox News is trying to make the Iraq war more of a minor issue when going into the Election. The Democrats are trying to make this one of their strong voting issues for the Election.
Many news reporters have come out over the last ten years to point out that Fox News, in both it’s national and local forms, have pressured the reporters to report in certain ways that could break the code of ethics. These reporters have stated that Fox News is more interested in making corporations look good in the public eye, and that Fox is not interested in stories that might bring large corporations down.
One of the most popular stories about this is the story about Steve Wilson. Wilson was working on a story that could have caused strong financial difficulty to a company that manufactures the bovine growth hormone. The purpose of the story was to show how many other countries other then the United States have linked the growth hormone in cows to cancer in humans.
Fox News pressured Steve Wilson and another reporter to change the story so that the company in question did not look bad. The two reporters refused to do so, and their boss told them that, “We decide what is news around here.”
The Democrats hope to gain support in their fight against Fox News. Fox News is becoming almost a war cry for Democratic candidates. It will be interesting to see how Fox News attempts to respond to this in the future.
