I always buy my meats and poultry in bulk and then repackage the food into smaller portions and stick them in my deep freeze. I can save a ton of money this way, since buying foods in bulk is generally much cheaper. Over the years I have tried many different products to wrap my foods in preparation for the harsh temperatures of my freezer. From white freezer paper to many different styles of freezer bags, I have tried most of them.
Until recently, I was using thick zip-style freezer bags, inserting a straw into the partially closed bag, and sucking the air out. This proved only marginally acceptable, since over time the bags would lose their seal, allowing air to enter. Ziplock has come up with a great product that takes care of this problem, with their Double Guard ziplock freezer bags that have two layers of protection.
This is a totally new way of freezing foods, and I love it! The bags look a bit different from ordinary Ziplock bags, as they are clear but also have a diamond shaped pattern throughout the plastic. I buy the gallon sized bags, and they are a generous 12″ x 10.5″ in size.
We just came back from a fishing trip, and I froze some salmon fillets in my motorhome freezer using these Ziplock bags, they worked great! I placed my salmon into the bag and closed the zipper top most of the way. Then I pressed the bag onto the fish and the inner layer actually did cling to my fish! I was then able to smooth out any wrinkles and remove the excess air from the bag, and closed the bag tightly. I froze the salmon immediately.
The top of the bag features two zippers that are easy to close, and they give me a tight seal. They don’t have the small plastic sliders for closing the bag, but worked effortlessly just the same. This product reminds me of the Glad Press ‘n Seal products. The diamond shaped lining of the Ziplock bags clings to the meat, thus preventing air from getting to them, and reducing the chances of freezer burn. On top of that, the plastic outer layer will seal to give foods that added protection. This two-layer sealing concept is a great one and they work very nicely.
We just caught 65 pounds of salmon, and while I did freeze a few fillets in our motorhome freezer, we dropped off most of the fish to be processed. The professionals fillet the salmon, vacuum seal it and flash freeze it for a charge of $1.29 a pound. The main reason we chose to do this was because we had 27 salmon to take care of. Not only would that take us a very long time to fillet all those fish, but putting that much food in a freezer takes it’s toll. If you overload your freezer with too much unfrozen food, it slows down the freezing rate, and can affect the quality of your food. It is also important to leave some room between the packages to allow air to circulate – then when the foods are frozen you can put them closer together or on top of each other.
Our professionally packaged salmon will last a year without getting any freezer burn, and fish stored in the Ziplock Double Guard bags will last 6-8 months. As long as you keep on top of what is in your freezer, these bags are a great product that save a lot of time and effort. No more cutting sheets of freezer paper and taping the packages shut. The Double Guard bags also have a white strip on the front that allows me to write the contents and date. If I write on plain plastic freezer bags, the marker often wears off, but this doesn’t happen with the white strip on these bags. It’s a great design!! They can be used for any type of meat, breads, and vegetables too.
In summary, I love these freezer bags. They have the two layer for protection, one to cling and the other to seal out air. The design is amazing, and they are well worth the price of $3.50 for a package of 16.
