One of the most important pieces of furniture in the bedroom is the bed. Using some simple techniques you can easily build your own headboard to really make your bed stand out in the room
Headboards for beds can be constructed from a wide variety of materials including fabric, wood, metal and even paint. A headboard doesn’t have to be complicated to really make an impact in a room. Even adding a simple headboard to your bed can help it to look like a more substantial piece of furniture and can help to set the decorating scheme for the room.
The easiest way to create a headboard for your bed is to use a technique where the headboard is attached to the wall rather than standing on legs. Unlike a traditional headboard which stands on the ground this type of headboard is either attached to or painted on the wall and the bed is pushed up against it.
Here are some ideas to get you started on building your own headboard:
Upholster a Wooden Headboard
To make an upholstered wooden headboard you will need to get a 4ft. by 8ft. sheet of medium density fiberboard (MDF), some quilt batting, enough upholstery fabric to cover the board, and a staple gun. You also will either need a table saw, a skill saw, or a jigsaw for cutting the headboard to size.
Once you have assembled your tools you are ready to get started. First, measure how wide your bed is. This is how wide you will want to cut your board. At the top of the board you can either leave it straight or cut it into a curved shape. Once you have your board cut it is time to upholster it.
To begin upholstering your board first lay out your batting and cut it to the size of the headboard. Next lay your fabric over the headboard and batting. Once your fabric is laid neatly over your headboard you will want to flip the board, the batting and the fabric upside down on your work surface.
Using your staple gun staple the fabric tightly to the back of the board being sure that it is stretched evenly in all directions. Now all that is left to do is to attach your headboard to the wall using screws. Then just push your bed up against the wall under the headboard and you’re done.
Make a Tile Headboard
Many people use tiles in their kitchens and bathrooms but few people think of using tile as the head board in their bedroom. Not only can tile make a beautiful headboard., but it is fairly easy to install
First you will need to find enough tile to cover the area that you want for your headboard. Try looking for unique natural stone tiles such as slate, granite or marble. You can often find enough tiles for a small project like this in the classifieds online or in your local newspaper.
Rather than tiling directly onto the wall you may want to consider tiling onto a board that is then attached to the wall. You can either tile on to medium density fiberboard or onto cement board. Attach your tiles to the board and using thinset mortar mixed according to the manufacturer’s instructions. On each corner of the board leave an area uncovered by tile where you can screw the board is in the wall.
Once your mortar has set attach the board to the wall using heavy duty screws. Put tile over the sections where the tiles are missing again using thinset mortar. Allow the mortar to set up according to the manufacturer’s instructions. Once everything is dry you can grout your headboard using sanded tile grout.
Paint a Headboard
An easy way to create a headboard which requires no construction skills is to simply paint one on the wall. All you need to do is mask off the area where you want to paint your headboard and using a latex paint and the color of your choice paint a headboard on the wall.
