According to an illinois.gov press release, the Illinois Department of Agriculture is offering a cheap and convenient way for Illinois farmers to dispose of their empty agrichemical containers and storage containers.
This summer, the Illinois Department of Agriculture has arranged through local services a way for farmers to dispose of their empty containers through a recycling program. The recycling program will start in late July. Sites all over the state will gather the containers, clean them out, and then grind them into small plastic chips to be re-used. This chips will be made into shipping pallets, fence posts, drainage tubing, plastic lumber, and hazardous waste drums. All this will be done at no costs to the farmers.
Illinois Agriculture Director Chuck Hartke said of the new recycling program, “this award-winning program reached a milestone last year with the collection of its two millionth agrichemical containers…it’s a perfect example of the effort Illinois farmers are making to protect our environment.”
Unfortunately the program does not apply to metal and household pesticide containers. The program “will accept only high-density polyethylene, #2 plastic, agrichemical containers that are clean and dry. Participants are responsible for rinsing them and removing all caps, labels, booklets and foil seals.”
“I think the program is a great idea,” said rural Illinois resident Barbara Hicks. “These containers just collect on farmers’ property when they are perfectly good for recycling.”
The recycling program is a collaboration between the Illinois Department of Agriculture, Agriculture Container Recycling Council, GROWMARK, Inc., Illinois Fertilizer and Chemical Association, Tri-Rinse, Inc., Illinois Farm Bureau and University of Illinois Extension.
