We had an opportunity to visit the city of Jamnagar in Gujarat State, which is known as the Paris of India as my maternal uncle is staying at Jamnagar. Jamnagar is a very beautiful city and the tourists keep on visiting this city to enjoy the historical site seeing places at Jamnagar. Lakhota fort is one of the main attractions to be viewed here at Jamnagar.
Jamnagar can easily be reached by train, air, or bus from almost all the major cities of the Gujarat State. We had traveled to Jamnagar by train that leaves Vadodara at around 5 pm in the evening and reaches Jamnagar at around 4 am in the next morning. The railway station of Jamnagar is around three miles away from the city center. The auto rickshaws are easily available from railway station for the city center at the rates of Rs.40 (eighty cents) per trip. This historical Lakhota fort is situated in the middle of the large Ranjit Sagar Lake. This man made Lake was made during the early Nineteenth century by the then Jamsaheb, King of Jamnagar to fulfill the need of drinking water for the city of Jamnagar. Most of the visitors and even local residents visit this Lakhota fort and the lake in the evening to enjoy the fresh cool breeze at the bank of the Lake. Lakhota fort is made in the form of a circular fort and can be reached by walking on the small walk way made in the Lake. There is a large historical museum inside the Lakhota fort that stores many historical items like weapons, pictures, royal ornaments, and the ancient coins used by the various kings of the Jamnagar State. There are four canons also kept here, which were used by the Jamnagar army to fight the Mogul attack during the seventeenth century. These canons are having two feet diameter and are around 34 feet long and have capacity to throw the fire balls up to the distance of around 4 miles. The entire museum is situated in three floors. The Royal chair of the king of Jamnagar, which is made of solid gold, is also kept here at this museum. Some of the personal belongings of Jamsaheb like his bed, mattress, pillows, ornaments, and the sword, which were used by him, are stored at this unique museum. The entire view of the Ranjit Sagar Lake from the top floor balcony of this Lakhota fort is extremely breathtaking, particularly towards the end of the rainy season during the month of October, when the Ranjit Sagar Lake gets full of water. There is an entrée fee of Rs.30 (sixty cents) per head for visiting this museum. It would be the best to use the government approved guide services available here to see all the items with their historical background. It may take around two to three hours to view this museum in details.
The visitors pass their time in the beautiful garden all along the shore of this beautiful Lake. There is a full size statue of King Jamsaheb in this beautiful garden. This statue is covered completely with solid gold sheet, around 3 mm thick. The statue is holding the sword in his hand and is in standing posture. The colorful water fountains in this garden add to its beauty, particularly during the late evening hours. This Ranjit Sagar Lake provides the drinking water to the entire city of Jamnagar. There is also boating facility available in this lake during the evening hours from 5 pm to 9 pm. The pedal boats for four persons are available at the rate of around Rs.400 ($8) per one hour. There is a famous Bhidbhanjan Mahadev temple also situated on the bank of the lake, just opposite to the Lakhota fort. The name of this unique temple has been included in the world record book as the continuous Ramdhun is going on at this temple since last sixty five years, on round the clock basis. The visitors also enjoy the walk around this Ranjit Sagar Lake during the early morning and evening hours.
There are many nice hotels available at Jamnagar for the visitors like Hotel Chetna, Hotel Dreamland, Hotel Ashoka, Hotel Aram, and Hotel Gita. We had stayed at Hotel Chetna, which offers excellent three star facilities at the rates of around Rs.3000 ($60) per day. There are some beautiful restaurants also available here that serve authentic Kathiawadi food items.
We had enjoyed our visit to this historical monument of Lakhota Fort and that is why has no hesitation in recommending a visit here to those who are interested in the history of India.
