Sony finally revealed the release date for their highly anticipated game, Infamous. The Playstation 3 exclusive will come out sooner than expected on May 26th.
Infamous is the next big first-party Playstation 3 game from Sony as it will follow critical hits like LittleBigPlanet, Resistance 2, Flower, Killzone 2 and MLB ’09: The Show. Heavily reliant on third-party support in the past, Sony has quietly improved their first-party efforts and is quickly becoming the best development companies in the gaming industry. Playstation 3 gamers have plenty to look forward to as well with Heavy Rain, Uncrated 2: Among Thieves, Ratchet and Clank Future: A Crack in Time, God of War III and Gran Turismo 5 still to come.
The development studio behind Infamous is Sucker Punch Productions. Previously, this second-party developer for Sony has made Rocket: Robot on Wheels on the Nintendo 64. Sucker Punch Productions is more known for the Sly Cooper trilogy for the Playstation 2. Infamous is their first Playstation 3 title and will also mark a dramatic departure for the company, who will be going for a more mature approach.
This is quite common departure for a Sony development studio. The audience for the Playstation 3 is much older than the Playstation 2 demographic due to a combination of factors (gamers getting older, more expensive price, etc). Because of this we see development teams like Naughty Dog and Insomniac Games going from kiddy platformers (Jak and Ratchet & Clank) to mature titles (Uncharted: Drake’s Fortune and Resistance). Sucker Punch Productions is following a similar path going from Sly Cooper to Infamous.
Unfortunately, Infamous also followed another trend for many Playstation 3 games: the long delays. The bug that stroke Killzone 2, LittleBigPlanet and Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots caught onto Sucker Punch Productions. Infamous was first announced in 2007 with a slated release date of 2008. However, Sony later delayed the game to spring 2009 after it became less and less likely that the game would be out in 2008.
Infamous features an open world city for the player to explore. You will control a character named Cole, a bike messenger which got new lighting powers after an unexpected explosion. Along with the mission based gameplay, you need to make several moral decisions that will affect the story as well as your lighting abilities.
Earlier this year, Sony announced that the game will be released in June. Fortunately, they bumped the release date up a little bit to May 26th. After the long delays, this should please many patient fans of Infamous.
