Susan Slade has been a Content Producer (CP) for Associated Content (AC) since 14th June 2007. She has already had over 30 articles published by AC. Her articles have focused a great deal on travel in Florida, and on tips about the UK.
In this interview I will find out more about Susan, her goals as a CP and her personal experience of being a British expat living in Florida.
Sophie: Susan, I would like to thank you for your time and for agreeing to this interview. First of all, can you tell me why you decided to start writing for AC?
Susie: Several of my friends who I have known for 7 years writing reviews/articles on the Internet were here and I finally gave into them to try the site out.
Sophie: What future writing goals do you have?
Susie: It has taken me all this time to find out what A.C. uses and doesn’t require, having had a dozen or more personal articles refused. I think I have figured it out and plan to write about local hospitals, nursing homes, restaurants, and of course my constant traveling.
Sophie: As you mentioned in your profile, you have lived in America for 19 years. What is life like as a British expat living in America? Are there any decent pubs near where you live?
Susie Everyone loves us. We owned Susie’s family restaurant for years before Len’s quintuple by-pass surgery. We are known as the English couple and everyone stops to talk to us. We are like celebrities, and we had a funny incident when we owned the restaurant. A very well known comedian from England, Jasper Carrot, would come out with us and everyone came over to Len and myself and gave us a hug. He was totally ignored. Since Len went on insulin for his diabetes we really don’t do drinking in pubs.
Sophie: What advice would you give to any other British expats who are planning a move to America? Do you sometimes face discrimination because of your nationality?
Susie: Really do your homework. It was so hard for us to get our first business visa. Now they have made it a lot easier but people are buying businesses that really don’t qualify. We know of numerous families that have lost everything and gone back to the U.K.
Even though we have lived here for over 19 years, because of 9/11 we now have to go to another county to renew our driver’s licenses. Before we would get them in the mail or go to the local one.
Sophie: You have written a few articles about caring for the elderly. What do you find most rewarding about this line of work?
Susie: The love and affection I get from them. They really appeciate the smallest act of kindness. I treat everyone as if they were my mother or father and I just wish other caregivers would do the same. I am truly blessed.
Sophie: Thank you once again for this opportunity to interview you, Susie. I wish you all the best with your writing here at AC. I’ll keep checking in on you. Keep up the good work!
