Like myself I’m sure everybody is wondering how come our technology isn’t more advanced. Don’t get me wrong, we’ve come a long way, I don’t know how they get a camera inside of a cell phone that is small enough to lose in your pocket, but they have. However, many of us expected more. Where are the flying cars? Where are the teleportation devices? Where are the invisibility cloaks?
I don’t know about flying cars or teleportation devices but scientists are working on invisibility technology. One scientist created a material that someone could drape over something to make it look invisible because it bends visible light. Most of these devices are created for the military. That makes sense. Making tanks, jets or boats that could sneak into another country seems like a good war tactic but you know eventually these kinds of things will get into the hands of civilians.
Invisibility is a popular answer when you ask the old question “what super power would you want?” I’m not sure this is a good idea though. How many people actually want invisibility for a good thing? Have you ever heard somebody say “I want invisibility so I can end world hunger?” Or, “I want invisibility to save the whales?” No, people who want invisibility want to go places they shouldn’t go and do things they shouldn’t do.
Think about all the bad people out there who would do bad things with invisibility. Crooks would have an easier way to steal things. Rapists would have an easier way to sneak into people’s homes. Others would take advantage of invisibility by sneaking into movie theaters, sporting events, concerts or other places, which is basically like stealing money from them.
Think about all the injuries that could occur from invisibility. Someone could be invisible and decide to run across the street but the car that runs over them doesn’t see them. Someone could be running along and trip over somebody invisible. Somebody could even use his or her invisibility to purposely hurt somebody without being seen.
Invisibility sounds cool in theory but it has a lot more negatives than it does positives. I don’t understand why scientists have to figure out these kinds of things. I think maybe they have a little too much time on their hands or have seen too many sci-fi movies. Can’t these scientists figure out how to cure cancer or how to feed more people rather than figure out how to turn people invisible, clone them, or turn them into a cyborg or something. So give it up scientists, we don’t need invisibility. Flying cars would be cool though.
