With a name like his, he has probably been mistaken for someone else often in his life. Some might have mistaken him for a famous soul singer who died not long ago. Others might think he was a running back for the Cleveland Browns. This James Brown, however, was a basketball player, not a football player, when he was a student at Harvard. This James Brown is best known for being a long-time host of Fox NFL Sunday, along with Terry Bradshaw, Howie Long, and Jimmy Johnson. The James Brown who has hosted Fox NFL Sunday is also a dedicated Christian who is open about his faith, and he shows it not only by talking about it but also by being involved in various local and national causes.
After playing basketball in high school and college, Brown was drafted by the Atlanta Hawks in the NBA and briefly played professional basketball. After leaving that, he worked for such companies as Xerox and Eastman Kodak before becoming a sports broadcaster. He started doing that after first broadcasting Washington Bullets basketball games for television. He has been a play-by-play announcer for NFL games and broadcasted the NBA finals and Winter Olympics. He has also been on various entertainment and sports shows for television. He became a minority owner of the Washington Nationals major league baseball team but is still best known for his work on Fox NFL Sunday.
Brown says every Sunday before the NFL football show he would pray, turning over his performance to God. He also often calls when he is on the road to have prayer with his mother and wife. James Brown, the dedicated Christian, says it is amazing how much worse things have gone when he isn’t “prayed up.”
James Brown says when one isn’t prepared, Satan, who “is very sly can creep in.” He says for that reason he prays that God will watch his tongue and allow him to only say things that please Him.
The dedicated Christian, James Brown, was captain of the basketball team at Harvard. He has won two Emmy’s for his work on Fox NFL Sunday.
Brown supports the Fellowship of Christian Athletes, a variety of other local and national causes, and is the National Spokesperson for the Neimann Pick Disease Foundation. The Neimann Pick Disease, according to Brown, is “heartbreaking,” because infants are the primary victims. Their metabolism is affected, and their nervous system deteriorates. The disease is often misdiagnosed.
In addition, Brown was involved with the East Africa Blitz and was host of the Path to Victory program.
James Brown, the dedicated Christian, is also the youth minister at a church in Washington, D.C. His wife is co-director of the ministry. The people he serves are from 9-20.
James Brown says that when he worked in the corporate world and was considered a success by the world, because of the good money he made, and the Corvette he owned, he felt a “distinct emptiness” in his life. He said he knew the reason was he wasn’t walking with God, and he turned his life back over to his Savior. He prayed that God would help him walk uprightly before Him. He described his life now as “wonderful.”
James Brown now challenges young people by saying that all other success in life, apart from believing and trusting Jesus Christ and his death on the cross for the forgiveness of sins and living for him, is “short-term success.” He says knowing Christ brings peace.
He challenges anyone who disbelieves his words to prove the Bible to be wrong. He says everyone who has honestly tried to prove the Bible is wrong have become convinced they were wrong instead.
