Passover is the 8 day observance commemorating the freedom and exodus of the Israelites (Jewish slaves) from Egypt during the reign of the Pharaoh Ramses II. It’s a time when families celebrate over lavish meals called Seders, songs, customs and the reading of the Haggadah, the Jewish religious text.
Listed below are some links to Passover kid-friendly activities and printables.
Passover printables and activities for kids – from John Kador
John Kador, a freelance author and speech writer says in his website, “For the past ten years, Passover seders at my house have featured child-centered Haggadot that I write for the occasion.
I want each seder to be spiritual and educational and entertaining. Most of all, I want to involve the children in ways that most traditional seders, in my experience, have not.
What better way than to have a play with parts assigned for everyone at the seder table?”
He has offered his Haggadot on his website to be used as a template or use them as an inspiration.
He says, “My credit comes from seeing these Haggadot come alive in your home.”
Passover printables and activities for kids – from Joan Nathan
Joan Nathan, the author of The Children’s Jewish Holiday Kitchen has written a cookbook that includes the kids to help in the kitchen as they learn more about the holiday. “When children help you cook for a holiday,” says Nathan, “they learn the meaning of that holiday.” This book features a collection of Jewish recipes and has specifically mentioned tasks that the kids can pitch in!
“The symbolic nature of Passover and especially the seder meal makes it a perfect vehicle for teaching,” Nathan says. “When the kids learn to separate eggs, they also learn why we use eggs instead of leavening. And when they learn to grate horseradish, they’re learning about the bitterness of slavery.”
I thought this is a wonderful activity for the kids which is different, makes them feel good, independent and more like big people.
