June is National Dairy Month, a time to celebrate dairy by making sure you’re getting the dairy products you need. Milk contains calcium and vitamin D to help keep your bones strong and healthy. MyPyramid.gov recommends that you drink 3 cups of milk a day. But you don’t just have to drink your dairy products – you can eat them, too.
How National Dairy Month began
National Dairy Month began as National Milk Month in June of 1937 as a way to promote drinking milk. The National Dairy Council began this holiday thinking of it as a way to promote the chain stores that sponsored National Milk Month. By 1939, however, they were promoting all dairy products, not just milk. In 1955, the American Dairy Association became the leader of the campaigns for National Dairy Month.
The meaning of National Dairy Month
Most Americans are not getting enough dairy products in their diets. The lack of dairy products leads to a risk of osteoporosis, high blood pressure, obesity, and colon cancer. During National Dairy Month, there is an increased effort to promote the consumption of dairy products. National Dairy Month is also a way to promote dairy farmers and the dairy industry.
How you can celebrate National Dairy Month
This June you can celebrate National Dairy Month by consuming the recommended intake of dairy products, which is three servings of dairy per day. This is not a difficult feat. If you prefer not to drink your milk, find other ways to incorporate dairy products into your meals. Eat cold cereal with milk in the morning, or an omelet with cheese. (I like to sprinkle cheese on almost everything.) Or eat yogurt or cottage cheese with your snack.
If you are unable to drink milk or eat dairy products for some reason, start taking calcium supplements daily. Even though I usually get plenty of dairy, I still take calcium supplements every day to keep my bones healthy.
Dairy products such as milk help build strong, healthy bones and prevent a decrease in bone mass. They also keep your tooth enamel strong and help prevent diseases like osteoporosis and colon cancer. National Dairy Month is a reminder to make sure you are getting the dairy products you need. Celebrate National Dairy Month this June by taking in at least three servings of dairy products daily.
