The body of Kelsey Smith, who went missing Saturday, was found today approximately 15 miles East of the location from which she was apparently abducted. Police did not say how she was slain.
One witness to the search, a homeschooling Mother who lives in a subdivision very close to where Kelsey Smith’s body was discovered, said that she noticed quite a lot of police and FBI activity Tuesday evening. The longtime Grandview resident said that she was taking her children to get an ice cream yesterday, when she noticed several cars parked in a new building site, about a mile from her home. As she returned from getting ice cream, she and her children passed the site again, and she realized the people walking in this area all had FBI shirts on, and were walking shoulder to shoulder down the side of the road, which is a wooded area. According to this resident, she and her family could hear the sound of helicopters flying over the area for hours, beginning at about 8pm. This afternoon, she learned that the body of Kelsey Smith had been located in the park behind her subdivision, an area that her own husband and child often frequent.
Kelsey Smith graduated from high school less than two weeks ago, and had been shopping at a Kansas City area Target store just before her apparent abduction. Surveillance footage of the store’s parking lot, although of very poor quality, shows what authorities believe to be Kelsey Smith being forced into a vehicle by an unknown perpetrator. Investigators do not know whether Kelsey Smith was picked at random, or abducted by someone that she knew.
Authorities are still trying to find information regarding a dark colored pickup truck that pulled into the Target parking lot just after Kelsey Smith. At approximately 7pm Saturday, the pickup truck parked in the same parking lot aisle where Kelsey Smith had parked just one minute earlier, according to police. A man is seen getting out of the pickup and walking into the same Target store that Kelsey Smith had entered.
Other surveillance footage shows a man leaving the store in close proximity to Kelsey Smith, an individual who has yet to be identified. The family of Kelsey Smith have stated that the young man in the surveillance video, whom police are calling a “person of interest”, is not recognized by anyone in their family.
About two hours after she went missing, Kelsey Smith’s Grandparents found her car parked in the parking lot of a suburban Kansas City mall, with her purse and packages still inside.
