The Kentucky Museum of Art and Craft (KMAC) will be hosting their 6th Annual Art Car Weekend on August 3rd and 4th in Louisville, Kentucky. The Kentucky Art Car Weekend is just one of several Art Car weekends held across the US, the weekend will feature a total of over 30 cars whose owners will be making their way to the Louisville area from many different states including Arkansas, Florida, Texas, North Carolina, Illinois, Maryland, Georgia, New Jersey, and Missouri.
The unique one-of-a-kind art cars will be on display on the 700 Block of West Main Street from Friday afternoon until Sunday morning. Friday the 3rd is downtown Louisville’s monthly First Friday Gallery Hop, during the Gallery Hop car artists will be on hand to talk to visitors, and some artists will have pieces of their original art work on display for sale. The KMAC has several events planned for the weekend. On Thursday night at the Melwood Art and Entertainment Center they will sponsor a full-fledged Drive-In Movie Theater that will feature art car movie-shorts, and a full length family film. On Friday evening at 8 PM there will be an “Illuminated Cruise” from West Main Street to Lynn’s Paradise Café where the cars will be on display in the parking lot until 10 PM, the cruise will also visit 4th Street Live and Market Street Art Strip along the way. On Saturday morning from 10 AM to 2 PM there will be a free Miniature Art Car Workshop open to the public in front of the KMAC building. At 1 PM on Saturday the Art Car Parade will depart from the Mid-City Mall traveling towards the Douglas Loop, and from there will travel to the Bardstown Road Presbytarian Church Parking Lot. The Art Cars will stay on display at the Bardstown Road Presbytarian Church until 5 PM, and the Squallis Puppeteers will be performing. The evening will wrap up with the KY Art Car Hoedown, which is open to the public, at the Melwood Art and Entertainment Center at 6 PM.
The KMAC will be raffling off a chance for one lucky winner and their guest to ride in the Art Car Parade on Saturday. The lucky winner will have the opportunity to ride in “That Car”, which is a 1990 Mazda Miata convertible covered in plastic toys, CD’s, hot wheels and silicone that was created by local Art Car Artist Greg Phelps. Raffle tickets are available now for $5 each.
