I fell in love with the Kid Nation reality TV show the moment I first caught an episode. Luck for me the first episode I caught was the very first episode in the season. I have managed to follow it ever since, thanks to my trusty ol’ Tivo.
What Is Kid Nation?
For those of you who have not followed the show, it’s basically a ‘Lord Of The Flies’ concept. A bunch of kids are thrown into a ghost town called Bonanza City. Here they must work together to make turn the town into an efficient living environment…while trying not to butt heads with the other children.
In the town they have a council which consists of 4 members. 1 member per team (red team, blue, green and yellow). The council is basically in charge of making the rules, and enforcing them. They are also in charge of choosing one solitary kid at the end of each show to win a gold star. This kid is chosen based on how hard they work, how well they get along with other kids, and how much they contribute.
I loved the concept…but recently certain things started to bother me.
My first issue comes from the fact that some of the children have little to no air time at all. As a matter of fact, last week I saw some new faces on the show that honestly, I had never seen before. That was odd…why had this child not been given air time? Why had this child been casted to the side for so long?
My next issue goes to the kids who win the gold star based on birthdays!? A few weeks ago 8 year old Mallory was given a gold star all because it was her birthday. Granted she is the youngest kid there, pulling her weight…I didn’t see how it was fair.
There is one kid from New Jersey named Eric on the show. Eric is ALWAYS civil with the other kids, and every glimpse I get of him on the show he is pulling his weight, helping the other kids, and setting a good example…so why the hell has he not gotten a star yet?
For me things in the show are starting to bother me, because I’m getting a sense of favoritism. It seems like the gold star ceremony is a big popularity contest, and quite frankly it’s sort of sickening.
On another note, why the hell hasn’t Mike gotten a star yet?!
Although I love the show, I’m starting to see the popularity contest in full swing. Last week especially…when the green teams council refused to change their members around…yet every other team did? What is up with that?
Either way, I will continue to watch, and hope that the council gives Eric what he deserves.
