Kohan is a fusion restaurant that offers both Korean and a Japanese mix and it is located at 730 West Maxwell Street in the University Village area, and the hours of operations are for lunch from Monday through Friday from 11:30 A.M to 4:00 P.M, while dinner is served from Monday through Thursday from 4:00 P.M to 10:00 P.M, Friday and Saturday from 4:00 P.M to 11:00 P.M, and Sunday from 4:00 P.M to 9:00 P.M. The restaurant also has a nice outside patio with big red umbrellas to cover you from the sun in the warmer summer months, and the décor of the inside also features the bright blood red color through out.
For their hot appetizers you can order the beef carpaccio which is slightly grilled and sliced New York steak with a Kohan citrus soy sauce for $8.00, or the royal seafood butteryaki which is sautéed scallops and shrimp topped with ginger flakes for $12.00, or even the combination tempura which is two pieces of shrimp tempura and seven pieces of assorted vegetables for $9.00.
While for their cold appetizers you can order a scallop rice cracker which is grilled scallop, tomato, onion, scallions, and spicy mayonnaise on rice chips for $8.00, or the seafood salad which includes shrimp, fresh scallop, crab, cucumber and daikon on a bed of spring mix vegetables served with a sesame dressing for $12.00 or even a salmon roller which is daikon, cucumber, and kaiware sprouts rolled in thinly sliced salmon served with a Kohan Citrus Sauce for $10.00.
For their noodles section you can find the Nabeyaki Udon which are noodles in a seasoned hot soup with chicken, spinach, scallion, fish cake, Inari age, shrimp tempura or even the Yaki Soba which are pan fried thin (or thick) noodles with chicken and vegetable in house teriyaki sauce for $10.00.
And if you are into sushi, you can not miss the Kohan special maki such as the Chicago Bulls (my guess this is one of the city’s favorite) which is spicy tuna over fresh yellowtail, sliced jalapeno, avocado, asparagus, topped with tobiko for $15.00, or the Prothero-white dragon which is super white tuna over a shrimp tempura roll with black tobiko and wasabi mayonnaise for $14.00 or even the wonderful White Sox vs. Cubs which is white tuna over yellowtail, crab, avocado, and cucumber topped with black tobiko , and a wasabi mayonnaise for $27.00.
And for their Teppan entrées you can order the salmon teriyaki for $18.00, calamari teriyaki for $16.00, the love boat which includes chicken teriyaki, Korean BBQ beef short ribs, shrimp and vegetable tempura, gyoza, and a California roll for $38.00 and this plate serves two, unless you are extremely hungry.
