Shawnee, OK – Southern Cruisers Riding Club, Shawnee Kruizers Chapter 194, helped raise over $3,000 for St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital. The Kruizers state meet, June 5 and 6, was a themed event, covering over 300 miles. First of it’s kind for the club, it was a ride through history, following the trail of a noted bank robber and infamous celebrity of his time. The Life and Times of Charles Arthur “Pretty Boy” Floyd was the theme of the ride. Starting in, and returning to, Shawnee, the ride included stops in Earlsboro, Maud, Seminole, Meeker, Paden, Boley, Morris, Sallisaw, and Akins.
At each stop along the tour, historians were available to give accounts of the exploits of Floyd and his cohorts. The city of Maud surprised the riders with a live historical reenactment. “Pretty Boy” Floyd and George Birdwell, Floyd’s accomplice, robbed the bank, took the sheriff hostage, and drove off with guns blazing. During the actual event, which occurred on September 29, 1931, Floyd, Birdwell, and an unknown driver, robbed the First National Bank of Maud and made off with $3,849.28, their largest single take from an Oklahoma bank. Ironically, almost the same amount raised for charity, on the themed tour by the Kruizers, more than seven decades later.
A commemorative painting was donated to the event by Tanya Provines for use as a door prize. Provines uses genuine Oklahoma red dirt to make pastel, watercolor, and oil paint to create her Oklahoma Red Dirt Artwork TM. The painting features a montage of images of Floyd and his most famous quote, “My life isn’t worth a damn, but I’m not afraid of anything or anybody.” The painting was presented to Paul Williams, a long-time “Pretty Boy” Floyd historian. Jack White, owner of White’s Automotive, presented the original painting to Williams on behalf of SCRC, Chapter 194 members. Prints of the painting are available at www.okreddirtartwork.webhero.com., under the Red Dirt Prints tab. A portion of the proceeds from the sales of the prints will also be donated to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital.
