After a long winter of entertaining family and friends inside our homes, summer beckons us to come outside for backyard entertaining. We are more than ready to take our entertaining endeavors outside, it’s a more laid back atmosphere and open space, but is our backyard entertainment ready? We have a grill, a table and chairs, what more is needed to make our backyard landscape design inviting and comfortable for entertaining?
The grill, table and chairs is a good starting place for the landscape design, now think about creating designated backyard spaces like outdoor rooms where specific things will take place.
The grill needs a space in the landscape that mimics a kitchen, the table and chairs needs it’s own backyard space that mimics a dining room. These outdoor rooms can be created and defined by using different ground covering and/or overhead shading suitable for outdoors. Bricks, concrete, flagstones or pea gravel can be used as ground covers to mimic room flooring and define a landscape space. Use one ground cover material in the grill area and a different ground cover material in the dining area, connecting the two separate outdoor rooms stepping stone or a flagstone pathway.
A pergola, vine covered arbor or trellis or a tent can be used to provide shade in the grilling or eating area to further define the landscape space. Hedges or shrubs strategically planted in your landscape design will mimic rooms walls in backyard spaces to define spaces for eating, playing and conversation. Pathways with a ground cover leading to each designated area will help keep your guest traffic flowing smoothly.
Backyard entertainment requires seating, which can be incorporated into your landscape design with raised bed gardens. Border the raised bed gardens with stones or wood at suitable heights to be used as seating. Slopes in your landscape can be contoured, tiered and covered with sod for easy ground seating, or add wide steps down the slope for a seating area.
Solar lighting adds beauty to a landscape design, helps define areas and will enable the backyard entertainment to continue after dark. Best of all, solar lighting uses no electricity.
A free-standing backyard fireplace, fire pit or chiminea surrounded by comfy seating can extend backyard entertainment season by providing outdoor heat on chilly nights.
Speakers that look like rocks can be discreetly placed in the landscape design for musical entertainment. Large, decorative flower pots, urns or even whiskey barrels cut in half can be incorporated into the backyard landscape design to be used as ice coolers for beverages.
When planning a landscape design for backyard entertainment, consider space definition, seating, lighting and traffic flow.
