I remember as a child there being all you can carry pumpkin patches scattered all throughout Long Island, but such farms have practically disappeared. Now farms will only sell you pumpkins by the pound, and trust me buying pumpkins by the pound can become a costly, over priced tradition. However if you don’t know where to go pumpkin picking, you are left with no choice but to spend top dollar for the fall decoration.
I figured though, since I’m a local, and I know where you can buy pumpkins for pennies on the dollar, I would spill. Now just make sure you save some for me! Mm-Kay!?
Many people are unaware that there is one farm on Long Island still practicing this old school tradition of carrying all you can for one final price. No strings attached. That farm is known as Lewin Farms.
Lewin Farms will charge you $15 for all you can carry, so this means bring someone in the family with a long set of arms and some muscle power. For $15 you can walk away with more pumpkins than you will know what to do with.
For the last few years the farms were doing the all you can carry pumpkins for $15, but prices may have changed do to poor crops this year, so be sure to call in advance before you take the trip out there. The number is 631-929-4327.
Lewin Farms has a gigantic pumpkin patch every year with pumpkins in extreme sizes, to tiny ones to decorate kitchen counters.
Last time we were at Lewin Farms my boyfriend made out with nearly 9 or 10 pumpkins all in sizes from large to small. In all honesty we felt as if we were robbing them, seeing how just down the road another farm was getting nearly $8 for just 1 pumpkin.
Lewin Farms doesn’t stop with just pumpkins though, in the winter time you can come and cut down your own Christmas tree, In August you are able to come and pick your own peppers, tomatoes and egg plants. Right now you can take a visit to the farm to pick your own peaches, and apples. Pumpkin picking occurs at the end of September. Like I said though, before you go looking to pick a specific fruit or vegetable, call in advance to make sure they are available, and ask for pricing.
Lewin Farms also has a farm stand for those not wishing to pick their own fruits and vegetables. You can buy them right their at the stand already packaged for you. They are just as fresh as they would be if you had picked them yourself.
In all honesty Lewin Farms is a place that the entire family will enjoy, the prices are practically a steal, and the fruits and vegetables are fantastic. Not many farms give you the option to pick your own year round, and practically NO farms give you the ‘all you can carry’ option, so in my opinion this option makes Lewin Farms the best farm on all of Long Island.
