The Mayor from Greensburg, Kan., Lonnie McCollum has announced that he no longer wants to be mayor, according to a the Associated Press news report. Greensburg suffered a huge tornado and nearly 90% of the whole town was destroyed. The mayor wants to keep his mind on his family and he says he is not the leader that the city needs.
Greensburg, Kansas became the headline on newspapers all across the nation after the May 2007 tornado outbreak in the mid west. According to Wikipedia, this outbreak started on May 4, 2007 and over 90% of the Greensburg, Kansas was destroyed. The tornado was an EF5 on the new National Weather Service tornado scale. 10 people in Greensburg were killed and 60 were injured as a result of the storm.
The storm gained strength as it approached Greensburg at approximately 9:38 PM and storm chasers sent in reports that the tornado had grown to 1/2 mile wide. The tornado ravaged the city a short time later. Based on the damage reports, the tornado had winds in excess of 205 MPH.
With the recent announcement from the mayor, the council in Greensburg, based on the the Associated Press news report said “he’s submitted his resignation, but it’s laying on a table ignored. We need him to rest up a little bit, and it’s our hope to get him back. He’s doing such a good job, and he’s so qualified. I’d much rather he be doing the job than me.”
The mayor is 62 years old and does not want to change his mind. He has made his decision and does not want to change it. The mayor’s house was one of the houses destroyed by the tornado. Based on the the Associated Press news report, the Mayor said, “this time, for the first time in my life I’m going to let go of it … because I really think I need to do it for myself and my wife and my family,” said McCollum.
The mayor continued and said “I’m a little snappy sometimes when I’m not getting my way … and I think there’s no place for that now”. Lonnie McCollum says he is also tired of dealing with the complaints and attending meeting after meeting. He just wants to be happy in retirement at this time.
Wikipedia reports that just after the tornado hit, the city was completely evacuated. The Kansas National Guard was called in to the scene and people who were injured were sent to hospitals outside of Greensburg. The governor of Kansas, Kathleen Seblius along with President George Bush declared Kiowa County a disaster area. The residents hope their town will be completely rebuilt sometime in the future.
