Man-eater, Plague and Insurance Agent
Dr.John and his friend Tim an insurance agent traveled in a car on a long journey. The vehicle belonged to the doctor. On the way a thunderstorm struck followed by heavy rains causing dislocation of traffic. Trees were uprooted in some places along the route. Branches fell on the road obstructing traffic. Dr.John was at the wheel. He drove carefully. When he reached the 52nd mile a branch fell right on top of the vehicle Luckily the occupants ducked under the seat and had a miraculous escape and had only minor bruises. The car was damaged. The occupants thanked God for His grace. The doctor sought Tim’s help for speedy settlement of the insurance claim. While taking leave of the doctor, Tim assured that he would process the claim and arrange for expeditious settlement.
A month passed by and the anxious doctor asked the insurance agent.
“Tim, what happened to my claim?”
Tim replied, “Dr. it is being processed. You need not worry. The Company will settle it soon and you will get the check. I take care.”
Ever after a month there was no sign of payment. Dr.John enquired and got a reply from the Company. ” Your claim for payment for damages to the vehicle is dismissed”
The worried doctor frantically searched for the insurance agent and asked him,
” Tim, You said payment would be made soon. But the claim is rejected. What happened?”
Tim reassured him that there was no cause for anxiety.
Meanwhile another communication came from the Insurance Company. This was in response to the doctor’s urgent reminder to know about the cause for rejection of the claim.
The Company wrote,” Sir, your claim is dismissed. The reason is, against the question, ” was he sober, you have given the answer as ‘NO’.”
. The doctor was disappointed. He contacted his friend and said
” You said everything was OK, but see the report. You have written ‘No’ against the column ” was he sober” Why did you write like this?
The agent replied, Doctor, I thought sober meant drunk”.
The doctor recalled his long association with him and in disgust remarked. Tom, I am terribly disappointed over your handling this case. What harm did I do to you? Were you drunk while filling the claim form? You should have shown me at least minimum consideration. If you did not know the meaning of any word you should have asked me. Instead you asked me to sign the blank form and filled up all details as if you were fully confident. Now see how much difficulty and loss I am facing. I find it difficult to consider you as a friend. I am scared of you. I know people dreadfully fear maneater, and plague now I add you insurance agent also to the list. This is the certification you need and deserve”
Tim,” I realize I have caused you loss and agony. But how can you equate me with a man eater”.
Dr.John.” That is because both instill fear of death in man. You do that when you approach someone for initiating a proposal for insurance”.
