We are never at our best when you go to a doctor, and because of that we often forget to ask vital medical questions. A doctor will only spend a few minutes with us, the better prepared we are for the visit in terms of knowing the right medical questions to ask our doctor, the more information we’ll receive which will impact our recovery.
This is a guideline of pertinent medical questions to ask your doctor when a health issue arises necessitating a visit to your doctor.
If you have a particular condition, ask you doctor specifically what is wrong with you and what caused the condition and what steps you can take to prevent it from occurring again. Ask your doctor if the condition is serious and if it is contagious. You will also need to know if there are any foods, medications or activities that you should avoid while you have the condition and what the recommended type(s) of treatment options are available.
If your doctor orders further testing for a condition, ask your doctor what the tests are and why the tests are needed. Ask your doctor what you need to do to prepare for the tests, how long will the tests take and if the tests will be painful. Ask your doctor if there are any risks involved with the tests, any side effects from the tests and when you will receive the test results.
If your condition requires a prescription, ask your doctor what does the medicine do and why it is being prescribed. Ask your doctor when you should take the medicine, how long to take the medicine and if the medicine should be taken with or without food. Ask your doctor if there are any foods or activates that you should avoid while on the prescription medication, sometimes a simple thing like a glass of grapefruit juice or time in the sun can produce negative side effects. Ask your doctor what you should do if you miss a dose of the medicine and how long before you see results of the medication working on your condition. Also ask your doctor if there is a cheaper or generic form of the medication.
You need to discuss drug interactions with your doctor as well, and here is where you need to be absolutely clear with your doctor about what medications your are taking. Make sure your doctor knows exactly what your are taking and the amount of dosages, even over-the-counter medications, herb supplements and vitamins can impact the way a prescription drug affects you.
Being prepared with medical questions to ask your doctor will improve the quality of the time your spend with your doctor and will help to expedite your recovery.
