Every time you go to the doctors they update your Medical records. Most people think that’s the end of it thinking that no one else gets to see your records unless you request it in writing to the Doctor that you can’t to transfer the records to another doctor, or personally give permission to allow someone else to see them. But actually, there is a Central Database that is shared by many companies about your medical conditions, and contains much of your information from your medical charts.
Medical records that are in the Medical Information Bank may contain information about your lifestyles, if you smoke or drink, and may go as far as to contain your family history. It also contains if you have seen a psychologist or a chiropractor. They contain medications that you have been prescribed. The report will also show general information about you, height, weight, X-rays that you have had, or other medical tests you have been through.
Insurance companies can access your medical records to see if you have an existing condition. Or if you are applying for insurance, such as life insurance, they can request a copy of your medical records. Government agencies can get a copy if you are applying for a government program.
Since rates for insurance can be affected by this report it is a good idea to write and get a copy of your report to see what information they have on you if they have the information. Not everyone will have a file. The file much like a credit report will also have the agencies that have requested a copy of your file recently.
How to keep your information private
There is only one way to really keep your information private, which is to change doctors, and pay cash. Even then if you fill out the doctor’s paperwork correctly and honestly, you still have to give information to identify yourself, such as your name address, employer, and social security number.
To get a copy of your report send a request stating that you would like a copy of your Medical report to:
Medical Information Bureau
P O box 105 Essex Station
Boston, MA 02112
They will send you back a form and to fill out, and give you the price of copying the report. You are able to get a free copy of your report if you applied and were rejected by an insurance company. You have to request the file within 30 days. The rejection notice will give you information of where they received their information from.
You should request a copy and see what information they have for you regularly.
