This season’s ‘Dancing with the Stars’ is shaping up to be pretty exciting, despite a few not-so-hot performances.
I wasn’t incredibly impressed with the first performance of the night, that of former jailbird and songbird Lil Kim, but then I saw some of the other contenders.
Hers wasn’t the best of the night, but since she performed first, the judges had nothing to compare her to. She definitely does a good job moving fluidly, has great flexibility, and has no problem with choreography. Unfortunately, her height seems to take away from her performance.
The youngest contestant ever on ‘Dancing with the Stars’, however, definitely overcame her shortage of inches. Olympian Shawn Johnson had no problem with her dance, showcasing her flexibility and ease in performing in front of a crowd. Her performance was definitely the best of the night, but she hasn’t incorporated any gymnastics moves in her dancing yet (except for her quick gymnast arm movements, which the judges told her to work on making more fluid).
Second best was actually a male dancer, despite the fact that every entertainment show I’ve been watching has been saying that the women are definitely on top this year. The judges told Gilles Marini he’s going to have to keep working hard to stay on the show, because he doesn’t have the fan following some of the other contestants do. He’s most famous for his seductive role in the ‘Sex in the City’ movie, and he definitely sexed it up on the dance floor. Gilles put a lot more emotion into his dance than many of the other dancers, so what he lacked in technique (which actually didn’t appear to be all that much), he made up for in passion. He’s definitely a natural.
Steve-O definitely has a balance issue (he needs to get checked for an inner ear infection), and he still managed to make use of his crotch during his dance, banging it on partner Lacey Schwimmer’s head when they started their routine with a very interesting flip move. It was nice to see him actually in a calmer, more serious state, although he did say he “put his foot in the waltz’s butt.” Other less-than-stellar performances were those of NFL star Lawrence Taylor, who was still hard not to enjoy watching. It was kind of like watching your dad who never dances get out on the floor and have a good time; it may not be pretty, but it makes you smile. Ty Murray was as stiff as a piece of mesquite (this is a very hard kind of wood that cowboys are very obsessed with). But it was hard to tell if he really was trying or was a little embarrassed by the whole ordeal. Either way, I couldn’t help but feel a little bad for him.
Billionaire Steve Wozniak turned in one of the funniest performances of the night; he can’t dance, but he has a lot of energy for a nerd who is supposed to do nothing but sit at a computer all day. His performance did prompt the weirdest comment of the night; Bruno said he looked like a Teletubby in a gay pride parade.
Holly Madison was surprisingly humble (I guess it has something to do with no longer having a millionaire get you everything you want), and she and Denise Richards both reminded me of Barbie dolls; they danced exactly like the stiff-jointed dolls would if they were brought to life. Of course Holly didn’t have but a few days to practice, and as determined as she is, I expect her to get better.
Poor Belinda Carlisle had one of the more forgettable performances of the night. I didn’t think it was as bad as the judges said it was; just a little boring. Chuck Wicks, on the other hand, did a wonderful job dancing with his leading lady, girlfriend Julianne Houghs. The two had really great chemistry and will probably be around for quite awhile.
One of the most surprising performances to me was that of funnyman David Alan Grier. I think the judges critiqued him a little too harshly. He actually seems very dedicated to this competition, and will probably just continue to improve.
But of course the belle of the ball was Melissa Rycroft, the jilted would-be bride-to-be of ‘The Bachelor’ fame. Fans of the show felt nothing but sympathy for the reality show star, and will probably enjoy getting to see her until the very end of this season of ‘Dancing with the Stars’. Melissa Rycroft’s performance was elegant and visually stunning, although there was quite a bit of posing and ballet, something the star apparently has dabbled in. Smart choreography and a routine crafted around the beauty’s talent helped her make a splash with less than a week to learn the routine, and it looks like she’ll do an amazing job when given more time to practice.
So my top three performers right now are Melissa Rycroft, Shawn Johnson, and Gilles Marini, with Lil Kim very close behind them, and the bottom three would be Belinda Carlisle, Ty Murray, and Steve Wozniak. I expect to see two of these three in next week’s dance off, though I really hate to see anyone go, because what they lack in talent, they definitely make up for in entertainment value.
