Metal Gear Online is an action-adventure game released on Playstation 3 and developed by Kojima Productions. People have been clamoring for a Metal Gear multi-player online game for a long time. It’s finally arrived. So are the Metal zombies happy? Let’s take a look.
Story : There’s no story here as it’s an online game.
Graphics : The graphics are taken directly from Metal Gear Solid 4. The graphics in that game were stupendous but still. I’d like to see a little updating. I suppose there wasn’t much room for improvement anyway. The characters look great and are animated very well, the backgrounds likewise possess a large amount of detail. Great graphics all around, even if they are just taken from Metal Gear Solid 4.
Sound : You can actually select your own music before starting a game. The variety is really good and this is really nice touch. It adds a bit more personality to the game. The sound effects are also pretty good for the most part. However, there’s no limit on voice commands so you can be spammed repeatedly. And since there are a large portion of teenage males who play this game, expect that to become a huge problem. The sounds of people dying are a bit too pronounced, and I suggest either playing with your own music or turning the music on this way up to drown them out.
Game play : You create your character from the ground up, but there aren’t a huge amount of choices. There’s still enough to make things fun, though. The most disconcerting thing about this however is they you must pay for every character slot, and you must even pay to reset your character. First time players of this game won’t understand everything and may make a weaker character in the long run. A really bad idea all around. There’s a good variety of weaponry here, but they range from decent, to near useless, to insanely overpowered. Most hosts don’t allow the insanely overpowered ones so you’re stuck with the mediocre stuff. It’s not me being nitpicky either, many of these weapons have been notably toned down in effectiveness. There’s a ton of modes here, and they’re all pretty cool. Most are your basic on line stuff, but they’re still well executed.
Re playability : Honestly, it’s too early to tell. The game as it is without downloaded content is pretty bare but still very fun. They could make a lot of improvements and I think they will, over time.
Overall : 6/10. Some cool modes, but the on line Metal Gear Solid 4 needs some serious tweaking.
