Michael Jackson’s death on June 25th, 2009 shocked the world. Reports indicated the 50 year old singer collapsed in his home in Holmby Hills. After a 911 call, Paramedics arrived from the Los Angeles Fire Department. Efforts to revive the pulseless Jackson were in vain and he was rush to UCLA medical center. After Jackson remained unresponsive to doctor’s efforts to resuscitation, Jackson was pronounced dead at the hospital.
While Michael Jackson’s bizarre behavior was the center of much gossip and the butt of many Jokes, his fall from stardom became increasingly obvious. The start of Jackson’s demise in popularity started in 1993 when allegations surfaced that he had molested a 13 year old boy. The matter was settled out of court, but for many others the court of public opinion had given it’s own ruling. This even though the state closed the case citing lack of evidence. One thing that seemed to fall through the cracks of the media was that the boy, Jordan Chandler made the accusation some time after relations between him and Jackson Broke down. Chandler has also been tape recorded saying ” “If I go through with this, I win big-time. There’s no way I lose. I will get everything I want and they will be destroyed forever…Michael’s career will be over”. While Jordan’s father Evan, stands by his son, Jordan’s mother was adament that no wrong doing occured on the part of Jackson.
After the incident isolate allegations emerged that made tabloid heaven. Jackson who had openly admitted to a love of children was put under intense scrutiny. After the Granada TV produced documentary “Living with Michael Jackson” aired, the child in the documentary Gavin Arvizo, then 14, alleged that he had been molested by Michael Jackson. The documentary shows Jackson’s close relations with Arvizo, including him holding hands with him and discussing sleeping arrangements. Jackson was charged with 7 counts of child sexual abuse and 2 counts of administering an intoxicating substance in order to commit that felony. Among others, long time friend Elizabeth Taylor defended Michael Jackson. Taylor had witnessed much of the relationship between Jackson and Arvizo. She claimed the sessions in bed were watching ‘Walt Disney movies’, there was nothing ‘funny’ or ‘touchy feely’ about it.
To the press, it didn’t matter. As many know, a charge is just as good as a conviction in cases like these.
No one may know for certain what exactly happened in these two instances and the rumors that would surface
later, but one thing was for sure. Michael Jackson’s super star status was tarnished. This along with increasingly bizarre behavior over the years which didn’t help.
In 1996, Jackson was again put under unfavorable light with the lyrics ” Jew me, sue me” in the song ‘They don’t really care about us’. The lyrics reported to have upset Jackson’s long time friend Stephen Spielberg who considered the verse anti-semitic.
None of this however changes the fact that Michael Jackson was a musical genius who redefined the music of an era. The man was a genius, a born entertainer and an incredibly talented singer. While many of Jackson’s former fans drifted along to different tunes and mostly forgot about their childhood idol, Jackson suffered unfavorable portrayal and financial difficulty. Stunts such as dangling his infant child from a balcony, his ever changing, sometimes freakish appearance, his two marriages, one to Lisa Marie Presley, which produced no children, and one to nurse Deborah Rowe which produced two children (who Jackson was oddly protective over), his later estranged relationship with Rowe – all added to the Jackson saga, and the press loved every minute of it.
Michael Jackson’s third child was born by a surrogate mother whose identity he never revealed.
For now it seems, most of this has been forgotten. From Sydney to Tokyo, Thailand to Australia, and all across the United States Michael Jackson is being mourned by fans who feel this amazing talent was taken away all too soon. Televisions were on all day in staff lounges in Bangkok, to hear the latest news on the death that shocked the world. Jackson fans have been seen crying outside UCLA’s medical centre. Impromtu vigils and memorials are popping up in Korea. Michael Jackson may have lived in a world of his own but he was loved, perhaps forgotten in the world we live in today.
There is no doubt that Jackson’s songs will be played across the world in remembrance of the multi talented singer. A poor boy from Gary Indiana who grew to became one of the most recognized people in the world.
In the hours following Michael Jackson’s death, his song ‘thriller’ made it to number one on the American iTunes chart, with another eight of his songs making it to the top 40.
This all comes tragically after Jackson had decided to try to revive his career. A thirty day world tour kickstarting in London on the 13th of July 2009. Jackson holds several guiness book of records awards for his music, eight in 2006 alone. He has also recieved 13 grammy awards, 13 number one singles in his solo career, which is more than any other male artist. In addition, Michael Jackson as of today has sold over 750 million records world wide making him the world’s best selling male pop artist. With the rekindled interest of his fans, and those who realize they are still in fact fans of this brilliant muscian, expect the figures to rise.
Somethings about Michael Jackson that you should know but probably don’t. In 1999, Jackson was involved in a several charitable events. One of which included a benefit concert in Modena, Italy where Jackson was joined by Luciano Pavarotti. The benefit was in support of the Warchild, a non profit organization. The joint effort raised over a million dollars for impoverished children in Guatemala along with refugee children in Kosovo.
Michael Jackson also organized the “Michael Jackson & Friends” benefit concert, which took place in Germany and Korea and included artists such as The Scorpians, Luther Van Dross, Boyz II men, Slash, Mariah Carey Shobaba Chandrakumar, Prabhu Deva rahman, Andrea Bocelli and Luciana Bocelli. The proceeds went to UNESCO, the Red Cross and the “Nelson Mandela Children’s Fund”.
With Michael Jackson dead at 50, he is now in a place where he is perhaps more understood than he was here.
While odd at times, bizarre at others, one thing is beyond denial. Michael Jackson was a world class entertainer, a musical genius and his passing is a devastating loss to the music world.
For some, this is all remembered too late.
