Millions of people in the United States consider themselves to be either Republicans or Democrats, but do not have a basic understanding the basis of their Political Parties. There are strong misconceptions about what the core principles are of the two Parties.
The basic principle of the Republican Party is that the Federal Government should be limited to only managerial tasks for the United States. The goal of the Republican Party is to reduce the scope of the Federal Government, and to give more power to the States.
Many people believe that the Republican Party is based on the principle of promoting big business. This is not true. Over the last thirty years, the Republicans have pushed for looser legislation on corporations, as the belief is that the States should govern over big business. The principle of the Republican Party states that the Federal Government should not bog itself down worrying about the plans and promotions of corporations.
Some people believe that the Republican Party stands only for the rich in society. This goes along with the limiting of a Federal role in corporations. The Republicans are more interested in having the States worry about the rich, or poor, or the middle class.
Some people believe that the Republican Party stands for an Orwellian Style of an all-controlling government. The, “Big Brother Argument,” could not be further from the truth.
It is the moderate Republicans that have pushed for a more controlling and watchful government in the United States. As a Party, the Republicans are starting to try to get back to their core belief that legislation like the Patriot Act is against their core belief system.
When most people are asked about what the Democrats stand for, they will reply that Democrats are for the working people in our society. This is not necessarily true to their core belief.
The Democratic Party stands for a stronger Federal Government, and less power for the State Governments. Democrats are more interested in the Federal Government having more control over our lives.
A majority of the programs that are handled by the States are aid functions. The Democrats believe that the Federal Government should have full control over things like welfare, healthcare, and labor laws.
This push for, “common person,” issues have given the impression that the Democrats are for the working person, and against corporations. If anything, the Democrats are more interested in an Orwellian Style of authority for the Federal Government.
Constitutional Conservatives and Liberals
The United States Constitution gives a large amount of power to the States, and supports the idea that the Federal Government should be limited. Republicans are considered to be Constitutional Conservatives since they believe that the United States Government should follow the suggestion of the Constitution.
Democrats are considered to be Constitutional Liberals since their goal is to give more power to the Federal Government, and less to the States. This is against what the Constitution suggests, so it would be considered a Constitutional Liberal ideal.
Over the next year, millions of people will be stating to each other that they are either Republicans or Democrats. Most will not have a clear picture of what they actually are supposed to be standing for. Spread the word so that the United States can go back to understanding what the Political Parties are supposed to stand for.
