Mother’s Day is an important day. Not just because of the emotions it invokes in us but because it truly is a holiday after God’s heart. The Bible tells us that we are to honor our father and mother. What better way than to give her her own holiday? Here’s a lesson plan complete with some compelling characters from the Bible. This Mother’s Day lesson plan for children’s church was designed for 1 1/2 hour format. You may have to cut it down or stretch it out according to your own needs. I’m using the times we use. You can copy and replace the times. You’ve got my permission!
Our children’s church starts at 10:30 am but we open the doors at 10:15 am to welcome early birds! You’ll notice I like breaking up the format alot. Kids get bored after about 15 minutes so I swap the activities around to hold their interest.
10:15 am – 10:30 am Early Bird Time
Welcome kids with some early bird Mother’s Day crafts or coloring pages. During this time we also gather information by having kids and parents fill out information cards. If the child is new we introduce them to our volunteers and teachers, as well as the parents.
10:30 am – 10:35 am Welcome/Introduction
We get the party started with some upbeat music playing in the background as we welcome everyone. I give them a preview of next week’s lesson and give the new kids a chance to hi to everyone on the microphone. Then everyone gets to come up one by one and tell everyone their name and how old they are.
10:35 am – 10:45 am Praise and Worship
Pick any music you like. Every church and kids church is different so use whatever music is relevant to you.
10:45 am – 11:00 am Lesson Intro/Mother’s Day Bible Trivia
Tell kids why we honor mother’s with a special day. I explain to kids how special it is to be a mom and what moms do. Then we play a little Bible Trivia. Here are the Bible questions we used. Don’t hurry through them. Take your time and have fun.
Who was the first mom? (Eve)
Who was the oldest woman in the Bible to have a baby? (Sarah)
Who prayed for a baby and God gave her one? (Hannah, Samuel’s mother)
What baby was saved by his mom by putting him in a basket and floating him down the river away from the soldiers? (Baby Moses)
Who was Jesus mother? (Mary)
Who was King Solomon’s mother? (Bathsheba)
11:00 am – 11:10 am Mother’s Day Game
Play a fun game of Mother May I? Kids love this game.
11:10 am – 11:30 am Main Mother’s Day Lesson
Choose from one of the moms we mentioned in our trivia section and write a few notes. Study it out and see what God speaks to you about one of these special moms.
11:30 am – 11:45 am Game
Play a game of Simon Says and let kids stretch out their muscles.
11:45 am – 12:00 noon Snack and Review
Have kids settle down and share a snack with them. Give them a chance to ask questions and talk about the lesson with you.
If you have any time beyond that then I suggest giving kids a Mother’s Day craft or take home page to work on.
