Summer’s here, and it’s brought it’s hot, humid and muggy friends with it. It’s time to ditch your winter beauty routine and let your skin out to meet the sunshine! Put away those heavy foundations, greasy conditioners and drab lipsticks- and get out the coveted summer goodies! Oh yeah- don’t forget the sunscreen!
In the heat of the summer months, it can be hard to keep your skin smelling fresh and clean. Even the lightest sweat, when mixed with heavy perfumes, can be a recipe for disaster. So, instead of eau de parfum fragrances, opt for lighter, less concentrated, water based body mists instead. I recommend Bath and Body works Body Splash in a fruity, summery scent like Pearberry (now retired), Cucumber Melon or Country Apple ($9.00 each, Bath and Body Works Stores nationwide) . Avoid the heavier spicy scents, and if you choose something floral, make sure it isn’t overpowering (Try Sweet Pea). These light, moisturizing mists make a great alternative to both perfume and scented lotions. Body mists are a great idea because they are oil free and water based, and won’t clog pores. They also moisturize with ingredients like aloe and grape seed extracts. These fabulous products are a great refresher on a hot day, as you can spray it all over your body without having to worry about scent overload. They are cooling when they hit the skin, and tingly when they dry. Arms, legs, neck, and abdomen- they are good just about anywhere besides your face.
Mid-Summer’s hair is often greasy, boring and lifeless. Humidity can put a real damper on your mane, so it’s important to add an anti-frizz potion (try John Frieda Frizz-Eaze Hair Serum, $8.00 at drugstores) to your seasonal hair regimen. Use it only on the ends, where hair is prone to frizz. Don’t use too much, however. You only need about the size of a dime, or else your tresses will appear to be oily. In the shower, use a pH balanced gentle cleansing shampoo (Suave Daily Clarifying Shampoo, $2.50, at drugstores) that is clear in color. Unless you have chemically dry, unruly hair, stick to shampoos that you can see through in the summertime, as they tend to be lighter and leave less buildup in the hair. Follow with a light conditioner that isn’t too thick. (Try Suave Professionals Smooth and Sleek Conditioner, $3.39 at drugstores). Remember, in the summer, lighter cleansing is better than the greasy counterparts.
Exfoliation, exfoliation, exfoliation! It’s the crucial part of your summer beauty routine. In hot, sticky weather, you sweat- and whatever is in the air around you will stick to you like glue. Exhaust waste, campfire smoke, pollen- you name it, it’s probably on your skin at the end of the day. To make sure you get it all off, exfoliate with a natural loofah or exfoliating body wash (Try Bath and Body Works Body Scrub in Cucumber Melon, $10.50 at Bath and Body Works stores nationwide) to scrub off all of those blemish causing impurities. You’ll feel refreshed afterwards, and you’ll stave off unwanted breakouts.
Time to get rid of the sultry “smoky eye” look- it’s so last season! No, but really- less is more in hot weather, and a low maintenance eye makeup regimen is a great place to start. During the day, try a clear mascara to define lashes without risking raccoon eye in the afternoon. Sweep a pastel or nude shadow (Try Cover Girl singles eyeshadow in Mink, $4.00, drugstores) across your entire lid, and a slightly darker one in the crease. It’s natural, yet practical. And it looks fantastic! At night, use waterproof mascara to define and lengthen lashes, a light or nude color over the entire lid, and accent with a dark shadow smudged lightly on the outer corners of your eyes for a dramatic flair. Be light on the liner as it can cause eyes to string if you sweat and some makes it’s way into your eye.
Summer lips are simple lips! Bright, heavy cream lipsticks can be put away for the Fall. Now is the time for light, shiny glosses in playful colors like baby pink and coral- or even plain clear! (Try Bonne Bell Lip Lites in Strawberry Milkshake, $3.00, drugstores) Since glosses have less color concentration, they are easier to apply since you do not need a mirror for application. Keep yourself looking like a million bucks by having a shiny, beautiful pout all day long!
Creamy foundations are out when it’s hot! After you exfoliate and use an astringent toner for cleansing, (try Sea Breeze Astringent for Sensitive Skin, $6.00, drugstores) apply an oil free moisturizer. If you prefer, use a tinted moisturizer with at least 15SPF UVA/UVB protection (Try Cover Girl CG Smoothers Tinted Moisturizer, $8.00, drugstores) for a little extra coverage. Use a liquid concealer to hide blemishes. (Try Cover Girl Blemish Fighting Concealer with Salicylic Acid, $7.00, drugstores)
Add a healthy glow to your beautiful face with a light powder bronzer, brushed lightly over cheeks, forehead and chin. (Try Jane Cosmetics Compact Bronzer, $5.00, select drugstores) Keep the application light, as sweating can cause ugly streaks as the day goes on. Remember to put the blushes away until next year- they are too strong for summer, and the sunshine will give you a rosy glow all by itself.
