Labor Day weekend brings the National Buffalo Wing Festival to Buffalo, NY. The event will take place a Buffalo’s Dunn Tire Park on September 1st and 2nd. Tasting chicken wings is obviously the focus of the event but the festival features entertainment, contests, and prizes as well.
Admission tickets cost $5 a day and can be bought at the gates or earlier at the Buffalo Bison ticket office. Food tickets cost $1. A one dollar ticket will buy you two chicken wings.
Twenty five restaurants will be participating this year. The Anchor Bar is probably the most well known considering it is the place where the original buffalo wing and sauce were developed. Brickyard Pub & BBQ, Buffalo Wings & Rings, Buffalo Wild Wings, Captain Spongefoot Trading Company, Country Sweet Chicken and Ribs, Dynamic Wings and Subs, Hurricane Wings, Ker’s Winghouse, Native New Yorker, West Coast Hot Wings, Wing Coop, and Wings Over will all be making their first appearances at the festival this year. Restaurants come from all over the country to participate.
The festival runs from 12-10PM on Saturday and 12-7PM on Sunday. The Kid Zone is open the majority of that time to keep the kids occupied. There will be a place for them to design foam visors to wear all day. Kids can also customize their own journal with Booker and Paige, the Good Schools for All characters. There will be coloring activities and face painting. Consider getting your child finger-printed in case there is ever an emergency. Playing word scramble will give your child a chance to spin the prize wheel for a prize. There will also be a Spoken Word Poetry Slam Performance that people of all ages will enjoy.
At 1PM on Saturday, the 0.5K Chicken Wing Run begins and circles around Dunn Tire Park. Many people dress up in costumes or chicken suits to run the race. There are prizes awarded for fastest time, slowest time, most creative, and team awards for most creative and largest team.
The Buffalo Wing Traditional Sauce contest takes place on Sunday at 2PM. Anyone can enter and will be given chicken wings and a butane stove. Five local celebrities will judge your chicken wings, including presentation of the wings. Champions will receive trophies and national publicity so join in and compete.
Terry Buchwald will perform his Elvis Presley show at 3PM on Saturday on the main stage.
The Miss Buffalo Wing Contest will take place on Saturday at 4PM. Contestants must introduce themselves and answer a chicken wing trivial question.
Ending the festival on Sunday at 4PM is the Buffalo Buffet Bowl Eating Finals. Participants have 10 minutes to eat as many Sahlen’s Hot Dogs, Anderson’s Roast Beef Sandwiches, Mrs. T’s Perogis, and Bocce Chicken Wings as possible. First place wins $1000.
Check out the festival because it is a great way to end the summer with the family before school starts again. Thousands of people come out every year to enjoy the fun and good food.
